I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't bad! There was a lot of bad/sketchy dialogue but when it came to the actual fights I realised I was instinctively gripping the arm of the seat which I guess means I was into it. Most importantly it was actually bright and I could see what was happening

It delivered what it needed to. Good movie

Very enjoyable - the MBB stuff was dumb for many reasons but brief enough.

the Hong Kong stuff was all worth the hype for sure.

King of the Monsters was very good actually, so much better than the first snorefest. Another case where critics bumbled spectacularly. Hopefully they're at least right about this - seeing it tomorrow!

the fights are great but just like the other Godzilla movie the humans were pointless

MBB and that black guy were pointless and kept cutting in the action scenes for no fucking reason

I didn't like it as much as KotM unfortunately. Even for a silly action flick like this the plot was REALLY bad. I'm not asking for Shakespeare here, but there were some really bizarre leaps in story logic, and the entire subplot with MBB was terrible. I did enjoy the stuff with the little deaf Iwi girl though. This movie made you care about Kong a lot. Poor guy suffered so much.

As far as silly plot stuff I liked, the reveal that Mechagodzilla got taken over by Ghidorah was fantastic. I loved that little detail where you hear Ghidorah's evil laugh come out of its electronic mouth. I like that it definitively shows that Godzilla is capable of mopping the floor with Kong no problem, instead of trying to be evasive and balance things out. It makes you root for Kong more being an underdog, and seeing them both eventually team up becomes satisfying (that scene where they both yeet Mechagodzilla into a skyscraper is awesome). Overall the movie is cheesy and ridiculous, which is fine, but a bit too dumb in a lot of areas. Still it delivers what it promises. Seeing Godzilla and Kong fight each other was genuinely enjoyable.

Also, the reference to the infamous scene where King Kong shoved a tree down Godzilla's throat was so glorious I laughed for like a solid 10 seconds.

I liked the first Godzilla, but yeah it's slow. It's not a re-watchable movie imo.

KotM I really liked. Needed a little editing.

As much as the humans can be dumb, they hardly take up screen time during the Godzilla v Kong fights in HK. Round 2 is 3 minutes of really well done monster fighting, and the only humans you get are like 5-10 seconds of the HEAV team flying by Kong and Godzilla during atomic breath attack, which is honestly just an excuse for a cool angle of the fight.

Round 3 is pretty much all monster as well. KotM was cool but they show the people scurrying about while the fight rages, and we just want to see the fight.

MBB crew was totally awful though. Early on there was a stretch where they were bad but at least moved the plot along quickly. The only other thing they did well was that "I really wanted to hear the rest of that speech", that was kinda funny. I'd guess in a theater of 'casuals', those jokes might hit a little better than they do for us. But I mean, Mecha Godzilla with the Ghidorah mind required satellite uplink so it makes sense that some people could mess it up, so, from a distance it was OK that they saved the day. But the whisky stuff is terrible. At least they didnt guess the password correctly!

I really enjoyed it, probably tied with King of the Monsters for me.

This was the best they've done the human stuff, I thought, and that's mainly just because it's paced so well. Yeah, the MBB crew shenanigans is kind of whatever but I never found it actively bad or anything, and I actually enjoyed conspiracy guy. I think he only really made me laugh like once so the humor was definitely "eh" but again, I never felt like it was actively annoying or anything.

I really liked that they didn't tie the human characters to the emotional weight of the movie; they left that for the monsters. Sure, Watanabe had that great scene in KotM but other than that the human stuff always fell flat emotionally in this series. They really got that here. The stuff between Kong and the little girl is great. But they let lesser human characters die with a clear "you know you didn't care about them vibe" that I liked.

So yeah, compared to KotM:

  • Best human stuff in the series imho, mainly due to tighter pacing and not using human characters as the emotional centers of the movie
  • The Mechagodzilla reveal was top tier, even if I predicted everything that would happen in the movie from that point on. Still they executed it well.
  • As always these movies are absolute visual feasts and this may have been the best of the bunch with some really cool cinematography. I can't believe they created the Hollow Earth and didn't have the monsters fight there though.

For King of the Monsters, its pros are:

  • Well, Gidorah is so, so good, and then it has Mothra who is the goddamn MVP. Just in general more monsters is always welcome in these movies,
  • Better soundtrack. I really love that soundtrack.
  • Had the benefit of following the first Godzilla reboot so I had lower expectations in general

For the record, I also enjoyed 2014 Godzilla for what it was, but yeah, these movies have definitely stepped up their game since then.

I thought the human stuff in this movie was the absolute worst it's been. Some of the one liners from people make me feel physically upset, they're that bad. And it's not even mainly from the conspiracy guy, it's basically everyone. The little deaf girl was easily the best human character.

But regardless of all that. It had the by far, the best fights in the series, like goddamn! The Godzilla vs Kong fight in Hong Kong was the best Kaiju fight ever on film. And the one at sea was pretty fucking cool too. And then of course, watching Kong absolutely wreck Mecha with the axe was sweet. So yeah, all the horrendous human stuff is, luckily, more than made up for! Just that whole sequence starting with KvG through KGvM was awesome and I'll probably watch it again soon.

I skipped KotM and Kong Skull Island, how integral are those to this one (also is Kong even good?)I was gonna assume not at all and just jump in blind but with all the comparisons floating around here I figure I would check.

I did like the 2014 Godzilla movie and just never got around to KotM so I was planning on going back and watching it if I liked this.

Skull Island is a fine monster movie.

KotM is more important. But the most essential plot point is probably in the post-credits scene of KotM.

I really liked KotM but it just has one too many things going on. I re-watch it every few months.

It's hard to call it "intergral" because it's not exactly the strongest of plots, but this film ties into KotM in numerous ways.

I was initially mad as hell that the version I bought off prime didn't have Japanese audio with subtitles, but after the first ten minutes it was fun as hell picking out which voice actors were there and where I knew them from.

I literally loved everything about it. I'm someone who doesn't usually re-watch movies, especially not right after first viewing, but I re-watched this one last night again I loved it so much.

The callbacks to all of the previous Godzilla films are put in with subtlety and care. The musical score is absolutely FLAWLESS. The way it handles its criticism of government bureaucracy without becoming too heavy handed against Japan or even the US. The way it makes Godzilla into something unsettling to downright horrifying.

It's not perfect by any means and I can see someone disliking it though. There's a lot of stuff going on with the humans and the pacing can feel weird.

But also I think it highlights how Japan uniquely is affected by disaster, this one looking more into how they were forced to respond to the Tsunami and the Fukushima Reactor situation as opposed to the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki like the 1954 film did.

I love how the Japanese figure out a way to handle the problem themselves and while they are helped by the US and allies, Yaguchi and co. are the ones running the operation.

And that last shot is utterly terrifying with the humanoid looking creatures coming out of his tail. Especially when you realize that they weren't there when Godzilla was initially frozen. So that part of his evolution started AFTER being frozen.

Hah, I see that I'm not the only one that stumbled upon Shin Godzilla after watching Godzilla vs Kong. Definitely an interesting contrast between the two, and both enjoyable for different reasons.

For Godzilla vs Kong, it is pure spectacle and the whole movie revolves around setting the appropriate fight scenes, logic and sense be damned. Accept it on those terms, and there's a lot of fun to be had. I was kinda impressed how much emotion and communication could be gleaned from what was essentially two monsters yelling at each other.

Shin Godzilla is almost the polar opposite in tone. There's some solid visual work to be had, but the movie isn't about that so much as it is the political drama that unfolds when an unstoppable force washes up on your shore unexpectedly. It treats Godzilla with adequate respect and operates in a very grounded world, as opposed to the other movie where Apex can have magic science tunnels connecting Florida to Hong Kong because the plot demands it. It is a bit of a slow burn and the payoff isn't anything spectacular, but I can appreciate the more realistic take. It does what it sets out to do, and does it well, although it isn't gonna be to everyone's tastes. I was amused at all the english dialogue in the film..it wasn't even bad but it was just slightly off I struggled from giggling every time people spoke it. Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the use of Evangelion's 'Decisive Battle' theme music...did not expect to hear such an iconic piece here, though it doesn't feel out of place.

I think the 2000s Godzillas from Japan are fun because they ignore everything except for the original movie, so Godzilla is still just an evil force to remind Japan of the horrors of WWII. If you dig Shin Godzilla but want less bureaucracy and more crazy monster lore, I'd check out the millennium films. Specifically Godzilla GMK, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS.
