Most of the letters are similar enough to their regular counterparts that I cant imagine it would be hard for someone to read *legibly written* cursive.

This feels like a weird meme, like insisting zoomers dont know what a VHS tape is >_>

I can confidently say they don't.

I've seen posts on Reddit get to the front page where there's an image of some old letter handwritten in cursive, and sometimes the OP or top-rated reply is a "transcription" of what it says.

Idk how a non native English speaker perceives English cursive but it literally cant be worse than Russian cursive (which is legitimately their only form of handwriting, yet even most native russians have trouble reading a lot of peoples handwriting).

I dislike it because a person's handwriting greatly dictates if i can read it. Print even the worst i can usually decipher.

I can write in print fast. Just makes it look like a 1st graders handwriting.

I wouldnt say im weird about it. I just dont like not being able to read some peoples handwriting. Outside signatures it has no real purpose in day to day life print doesnt work just as well.

Hell how many peope as adults do a lot of writing in normal daily life these days anyways? I do but there is legitimate reasons my job dont want computers and shit around the job posts.

Cant speak for TC but I've personally wondered if it confused people learning English that we basically have 2 forms of our written language. Granted I dont know if thats in anyway common with other languages. Didnt know Russian cursive existed till this topic.

that might be the reason but it's silly to phrase the title like that when most esl people on ce are europeans whose native language uses the same "writing system"

Well tc did specifically ask for people who dont have English as their 1st language. They may be a extreme minority on here but im sure they exist. I know some do o. The site in general not positive about CE.

That's awesome. I love how Russian has a whole sublanguage consisting only of taboo words usually referred to as "mat" which means "mother" as in "fuck your mother." There's a whole genre of literature written purely in Mat.

why is 2nd language relevant to cursive?

Because for some I assume they didnt grow up with it being a half way normal thing like a lot of us. I mean think about it. You learn a new language get readinf and writing it down pat then get told there is a secondary way of writing it. I dont care what anyone says some cursive letters look nothing like the print version

Cursive writing is cursive writing, you don't need to learn it differently for English or Portuguese or Spanish or whatever... only other languages that don't use the roman alphabet I guess
In regards to it being a normal thing it may be just falling in disuse errywhere by now

i missed the cursive classes in elementary school, i've got absolutely shit vision and at the time was getting pulled out of that time slot for 'special education' sessions that did absolutely nothing useful unless the ability to halfass read braille is useful so i never picked up the skill. i cant write it and can barely read it and i cant see the point in this day and age when typing is a far more useful skill.

My kids went to a Catholic school for a few years and they still taught it there. Now they are in public and all the kids are amazed that they know how to write in cursive since no other kid knows how. The kids in my youngers class actually asked the teacher if what she was writing was a real thing.

Cursive is as exclusive to English as Comic Sans is. It's just a typeface. We learned it in school as well, but no one really bothered to make us keep using it as we grew up. I can see how it's useful, especially before typing was a huge thing, but at this point it's more just a learning tool than anything else.

It actually takes me *longer* to sign with cursive instead of print, and it always looks like dog shit anyway, and I sure as fuck can't read anybody else's cursive either.

Legitimately glad that it's a dying form.

First language English speaker and it sucks. They pounded it into you during your early school years to where some wouldn't even accept papers/work in print form. Then in high school nobody cared. My handwriting is horrible in general, but thanks to the cursive crap I've had to rewrite a couple of essays.
