Its not that some people cannot be bothered to.

Its that some people are intentionally held down and restricted from educational opportunities. And traditionally they're from poor, disenfranchised communities.

There is absolutely zero excuse with the plethora of free resources available to people. At this point they are choosing to be illiterate. And let's not pretend it'll take years to learn how, they already know the language and most people can learn to read within a week. Stop making excuses for people who choose to be ignorant.

Of course not. But 1 they're not voters at that point and 2. See above. There's zero excuse for an able bodied adult to remain illiterate in the United States.

The simple fact is that you don't have to know how to read to know who represents your interests. All throughout American history, people who can't read have been voting. That was never actually a requirement. The entire concept of literacy as a "requirement" was invented out of whole cloth to keep social and economic undesirables from exercising political power that could keep elites from enacting unpopular policies that benefitted only themselves.

That's exactly what's happening now. Again. And some of you are cheering it.
