Its not that some people cannot be bothered to.

Its that some people are intentionally held down and restricted from educational opportunities. And traditionally they're from poor, disenfranchised communities.

There is absolutely zero excuse with the plethora of free resources available to people. At this point they are choosing to be illiterate. And let's not pretend it'll take years to learn how, they already know the language and most people can learn to read within a week. Stop making excuses for people who choose to be ignorant.

And that's a problem.

Having a society-spanning belief that "everyone should be literate" is one thing.

Pointing towards those who are in fact illiterate as "the problem" and punishing them, rather than the system that led to them remaining illiterate is quite another.

Like do you think those people chose to remain illiterate from a young age?

Of course not. But 1 they're not voters at that point and 2. See above. There's zero excuse for an able bodied adult to remain illiterate in the United States.

It's as cute as it is sad that you think you have a point here. Answer me this laffyboi: do you really think people who are mentally disabled to the point they are physically incapable of reading are heavily invested in politics, or generally even understand the concept much less the issues?

The fuck out of here with that clown college "gotcha" attempt

The simple fact is that you don't have to know how to read to know who represents your interests. All throughout American history, people who can't read have been voting. That was never actually a requirement. The entire concept of literacy as a "requirement" was invented out of whole cloth to keep social and economic undesirables from exercising political power that could keep elites from enacting unpopular policies that benefitted only themselves.

That's exactly what's happening now. Again. And some of you are cheering it.

You mfers don't want democracy or deserve it.

how fucking sheltered do you have to be to equate literacy with understanding the world around you? Do people ITT really not understand how big of a problem adult illiteracy is? Do you think those people just dont participate in society and hold no opinions on government whatsoever? How fucking ignorant are some of yall lmfao

Being able to read. No. You need to be able to read, understand, and create aphorisms on Democracy in America at minimum. Why set the bar at mere literacy gaming pals!

Don't be dense. If rights are natural then the right to vote is one too.

Also we want to set standards of intelligence for people to vote but we don't have those on who we vote for, judging by how Marjorie Taylor Green is
