The reason: White households in Oakland on average make about three times as much annually than black households, according to the Oakland Equity Index.

seems fair though i'm sure there are white families making just as little as the average non-white family.

also, smells like communism xd

Looks like the mayor is using a private fund to dodge the issue:
The mayor of Oakland, California, on Tuesday announced a privately funded program that will give low-income families of color in the city $500 per month with no rules on how they can spend it.

As long as its privately funded and not tax payer money, I really dont have an issue with it. In principle I agree its silly to not give it to all people below a certain income level but again...its privately funded. People can do what they want with their money.

As for it being unconstitutional, it probably depends how much the city is involved. It is a private fund, but what exactly is the city's role in it beyond the Mayor announcing it?

Also how do they determine who is white and who isn't? If someone who is obviously white self identifies as non-white, are they eligible? Under most legal law in the US, race is determined by what a person self indififies as (i.e. people can put whatever race they want on the Census and job applications and as long as they identify as that, that is legally their race)

I don't understand the sins of the father mentality. This fund would barely go to whites anyway since barely any poor whites live in Oakland compared to other races.

I mean a government giving a population more capital can hardly be seen as a "wrong."

And if your first reaction to this is that it helps neonazis instead of helping black people then you need to reconsider your perspective.

You seem to think only one outcome can come from an action, cause and effect. You gonna deincintivise the white people in the area that are near the poverty line from supporting you not just the small demographic that falls below it. Class is just as important in any sort of political movement as race. None of this shit is as cut and dry as people want to make it

I'll let you in on a little secret:

Institutional racism has had such a devastating impact on black Americans that no amount of "equal treatment" will level the playing field. Black people are nearly a century behind in accrued capital compared to white people and that gap has not closed by any meaningful metric.

Equality isn't the solution, it's the result. And it's achieved through equity; which yes, means treating groups differently.

It is not the mayor's money.

The "Oakland Resilient Families" program has so far raised $6.75 million from private donors including Blue Meridian Partners, a national philanthropy group. To be eligible, individuals must have at least one child under the age 18 and an income that is at or below 50% of the area median income about $59,000 per year for a family of three.
