So when I unlocked Puppet Bunker it gave me a message saying I would only be able to get 1 item from the raid, I assume because it's the newest...but when I did it, I was able to throw my lot in for everything. Did I misunderstand?

There are gear drops, coins, and materia clusters. Everything but the cluster is unlocked. The gear you can roll on and win as much as you want. You get one coin each time you complete a run. The cluster you can only get one per week but also materia is plentiful so it isn't a big deal.

Keep in mind this is because it's an even patch and that raid is outdated. 24-mans release on odd patches. So next month when the third part drops, all 3 loot drops will be on one item per week for the new one. So make sure to only roll on gear you actually want.

Edit: Also idk if you know what the coins do but they are used to upgrade whatever the current tome set is. So save your coins because you will need one from Factory, one from Bunker, and one from the unreleased one to upgrade ONE cryptlurker piece.

One clarification for when the new alliance raid comes out in 5.5: you can roll on as many pieces as you want until you win one, at which point you're done for the week. This also only applies to gear pieces; there are no limits on the extra chest of collectable stuff at the end of the raid.

I would definitely start using materia now

For dps the priority is generally crit > direct hit > determination, though melee dps might want a particular amount of skill speed for a given rotation as well (and BLM wants spell speed, which is super annoying because it's the worst stat for RDM and SMN)

I still don't know the first thing about materia, except that I had to meld one once while levelling GOLDSMITH

It isn't necessary, but it's still a pretty decent amount of extra stats for very little effort!

Dont fret about that. Unless you're over melding, retrieval rates are hugely forgiving.

As for what melding is: if you ever played Diablo, Torchlight, or WoW, melding is adding gems to socket. Except the gems are materia. And the sockets are just "how many free additions do I get before I have to attempt to overmeld."

Also equipment has a cap on how much of an additional stat it can achieve from materia, so that's fun.

I did buy some stuff from the market earlier, and did some Eden exchanging to since the game, for the first time ever, actually explained an exchange system in a cutscene.

Right now I've got a mix of Yorha, Exarchic, Eden, Neo-Ishgardian, and Crystarium gear.

For the Yorha stuff? Some of that actually is the best stuff I have right now (2 pieces), but the rest is all in the dresser. I don't even know what the rest of this gear actually looks like TBQH.

I don't actually have any interest in "cool looking FFXIV" gear, my end goal is for every job to be some kind of cosplay, in game designed or otherwise.

Oh okay, that's a lot better at least. I should also mention if you want a decent weapon relatively quickly, you should start the current relic. It starts at i485 and is basically free. You can get it by picking up the "Hail to the Queen" quesy in Kugane and following that for a while.

Just note that upgrading the relic past the initial free one is extremely grindy and if you want to avoid that just stop after that.

If you already bought a better weapon then you can use it to gear alts (it lets you buy more weapons for 1000 poetics each) but it's not as high a priority.

Yeah my current weapon is 510, item level is 487 average. Gearing up high won't be a priority for a while as I'm gonna be focusing a lot on leveling jobs, but we'll see how it shakes up once I start getting invested in Timers and such.
