For perspective, America spends $700 billion on military per year (as "we don't want to be defenseless against other countries and terrorists" is one of few things the government can agree on). While China only spends $170 billion, less than a third of that amount.

Does China just not have the money to spend more? No. Do they have better things to do with their money? Yes.

Mao created a brutal regime. China is partially freed from that regime. The evidence of that is that free thought is permitted to the point where people can have religions again if they want to. They are trying to stop that with massive persecution of religions minorities.

But they won't succeed. The world knows and it's gonna put an end to it quick via sanctions. Belt and Road is a bullshit idea because unless the Uyghur situation is resolved, China's not belting or roading anything. And they'll only be doing it in the reality of a basically even split between China/Russia/USA for superpower status, working together to address the real fuckin lelephant in the room: climate change, Jesus Christ

religions flourishing there means people are free. because my Chinese coworkers all tell me that it's nice there and people are free to believe anything. Even that really popular summer movie, Crazy Rich Asians, which was shown in China in theaters openly showed Christianity and the Bible. That's huge.

There are a subset of state backed religions you are free to practice in China, but for instance it you are Catholic you follow the Chinese Catholic church which is not affiliated with the Vatican (which is why it still has ties with Taiwan). Muslims are also allowed to practice state backed Islam. The reason the genocide is occuring is because the region has longer for independence for a long time and the state sees their religious and cultural practices as key to extinguishing that. This is very similar to the cultural genocides done against various native people's in the US and was attempted by Imperial Japan in Korea and more successfully in Hokkaido and Okinawa (though now similar to the US the native people's there are attempting cultural revivals now with some government support). The cultural genocide in China isn't just Uyghurs, similar things are being done to Mongolians and have been done to Tibetans for a long time.

You seem to massively misunderstand how government works in China as well. Everything is decided at the top and propagated outward. Anything that goes wrong is blamed on local governments as a scapegoat. There isn't some backwards area defying Beijing by doing a genocide. Everyone is appointed based on loyalty to Xi and the current central government. Dissent is not allowed, and leads to you being arrested for corruption or basically anything they want (you aren't required to provide evidence, release the reason for an arrest, or given a public trial in China).

Everything was progressively getting better in China until Xi came to power. Keep in mind only around 10% of the general population is a member of the Communist Party, but almost all millionaires and billionaires are (China has the most of these in the world). In general the upper class dominates the CCP so that makes it very hard for reform to happen.

It's funny because Bill Maher wants something between our current system and their current system, while touting all of their accomplishments, which they could only achieve because of their current system and our system that funds it.

Freedom sucks sure, it allows for kids to be addicted to tiktok, it allows infrastructure projects to be litigated for extended periods of time, and it allows the coronavirus to keep coming back to bite us everytime we re-open.

But you know what, it also allows for a great deal of positive things too that Bill Maher conveniently overlooks because he mad we don't have fast train, and he no understand tiktok, and he want rave pool .
