Do you like this trope?

What do you think of the trope of characters who can absorb energy from others being used as a tool to solve the problem or even the playing field against a character who is too powerful to be defeated normally? Some recent examples being:

Agatha in WandaVision
Jack in Supernatural
Moro in Dragon Ball Super

A lot of the time it just seems kind of lazy or like the writers were backed into a corner, but at the same time it would be hard to find some other solution that isn't contrived. I think it works best in DBS because it would have been reasonable to have a new legitimately strong enemy, so it doesn't feel forced, and it also led to the development of new techniques that can be used in the future.

Just ban the enemy's superpower. They can't use it if it's illegal.

I mean, for heroes its fine as a one off, but usually itd be pretty boring for a normally-powerful character to be nerfed for the majority of their story.

sort of like how in Smallville, Clark couldnt walk ten feet without stumbling over kryptonite. It gets old. >_>

scale the threat to match the heros strength, or arrange circumstances so that the heros powers can solve some, but not all, conflicts.

as a tool to defeat villains? Its fine, so long as the act of draining the villain is treated as a conflict in and of itself.

A show of kindness may not do much help, but a show of cruelty may do much harm.

Parasite from DC Comics is basically the prime example of this right?

Oh yeah, I liked how that was handled in Hunter x Hunter with Meruem.
