You pay $2k for an exercise bike and then have to pay $39/month to even take advantage of its "benefits" such as live-streamed and recorded classes.

I'm confused as to how this could benefit anyone beyond a normal exercise bike. Like, do you really need a class to keep you motivated peddling? I think the only reason these became so popular is because of the pandemic. It allows people to feel some semblance of being in a cycling class or gym, I guess.

Do you have a Peloton? Do you like it?

My sister does. I don't get it. We have a cheap little spin bike and my wife just uses classes that are on youtube when she spins. Seems to be pretty happy with it.

This is exactly what I would do if I had a stationary bike and wanted to do the class route. So much more cost effective without the fancy brand-name gadget! I get most my biking in on my regular commute and day to day life then since I choose to bike everywhere and not drive.

I'm not annoyed at people into Pelotons, to be clear. I get that social interaction is a scarce commodity these days, so anything providing a semblance of that is cool, especially one promoting healthy activities. My problem is the company's ridiculous prices. But, I mean, that's capitalism. It's not like I'm not used to it.

Meanwhile, Zwift is $10/month and you can get a compatible smart trainer for under $500 pretty easily, and that'll let you use your own bike (though it's highly recommended to get a trainer tire to avoid destroying more roadworthy ones).

I made a nice chunk of change on the peloton stock. That looks like its going to be an easy way to make money every year. Buy in November and sell in January.

I'd be surprised if that lasts more than another year or two, since I doubt the trend will be around much longer than that (that, or the market will become more crowded), but that's not a bad idea until then.

It will, but I doubt Peloton itself will be around (or at least as successful as it currently is) for that long. It's very much a fad now, but as pretty much everyone here is pointing out, it doesn't really offer that much more than you'd get by getting a regular stationary bike for a tenth of the price and watching some spin classes on Youtube.

Now, in general, buying stock in nascent fitness trends in November and selling in January is going to be a good idea. I just don't think you'll be able to rely on Peloton for that long. Either the fad will die out, or competitors will step up to take a piece of the pie and leave less for Peloton itself.

Yeah Peloton is wild, it's great for moving from one point to another in Alliance Raids. Bless the physical ranged DPS who actually use it.

Supposedly they used to be priced reasonably, and few people bought them. Then they artificially jacked up the price to put forth an air of exclusivity, and sales skyrocketed.

It's just a scummy business making ridiculous money selling grotesquely overpriced shit by playing to people's stupidity and vanity.

Just like Apple.

Totally this. Our friends have a pelaton bike and treadmill. They love that shit and are constantly trying to sign up to attend live tapings and stuff.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was, and now what I'm with isn't it. And what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.

I don't have space for it and pre-covid I preferred going to spin class in person anyway cause of the lights/music. Kept me motivated and wanting to go.

Peloton would be cheaper than that for me though over time. I alternated between a cheap gym that was $90/month all access and paying $35/class for Soul Cycle. The cheaper gym didn't have any showers so I would go there on the way home, but I really liked to go before work and take a shower at the gym which would be Soul Cycle. Miss my gym in Austin :( that was ~$20/class with packages and nice showers.

Anyway, worth it for me since I hate other forms of exercise and never was into it before I found something that was fun and motivating. And I can afford it so /shrug

I have one. I love it. Having an instructor helps but what really motivates me is the leader board. I don't consider myself a competitive person but something about that leader board makes me push myself harder. I wouldn't put forth half that effort on a normal stationary bike, honestly.

You basically get spin classes without having to leave your house. For someone with a schedule like mine it's great. I basically do all my exercising and gaming when my kids are in bed. Maybe when they're a bit older going back to the gym will be feasible but for now the Peloton checks a lot of boxes for me.

I used to deliver and install them, and most of the people probably didnt even use them.

One guy bought it for his wife and made us put it in the exercise room... alongside like 3 other similar machines being used as coatracks.
