And there's a sequel, right?

I just need something to do, and when I find it, it brings me joy

It's funny how I'm playing old games and they keep coinciding with current day events

You're playing the original yeah? Don't play 2, you'll be very disappointed. Play 3 instead, its much much better than even 1st game. Then you can play 4 and 5, literally forget about 2. Its so bad they're making every other game before it so it doesn't contradict anything.

Isn't 5 after 2? Either way TC listen to this, don't play 2 if you don't want to play one of the worst games ever.

Mostly it was just boring and forgettable. And a bit easy compared to the others.

There were a couple good ideas that were poorly implemented (and later refined by 3)

My order:

Devil May Cry > Devil May Cry 5 > Devil May Cry 3 > Devil May Cry 4 > Devil May Cry 2.

It's worth pointing out if you can get the special editions of Devil May Cry 3, 4 and 5. It has more playable characters. One who is my favourite in the whole series is locked behind these editions.

It's fine. However the level design, boss fights and characters including Dante lacked feeling. I will say it has the best Devil Trigger in the series for Dante though and I enjoyed playing as Lucia but the game doesn't really have any connection to the rest in the series.

The guns are super OP.
As in the best option for every fight is to just spam guns until they die.

Devil May Cry 4 and 5 take place after 2 since Capcom retconned the Devil May Cry timeline. It's for the best.
Current timeline:
3 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 5

I just started with 5 because it was on sale on PSN recently. I feel like I'm not getting the rhythm of fighting quite right. Hopefully I start feeling like a bad ass at some point because that seems like the point of the game.

I played the first one on PS2 and I've liked the series ever since.

Devil May Cry is my favorite game. I know it lacks much of what went onto later games but damn, that atmosphere still gets me.

You can play 2 just to say you played it but it was such a letdown after 1.

I remember my awful dialup back in the day took all night to download the trailer.

These types of games I usually have to beat through once before the mechanics click and you learn how to manage all the different enemies. Then you see how awesome you got on the next playthrough.

In Devil May Cry 5 Dante is your "badass" character. It's also fun if you unlock the infinite Devil Trigger outfits.

I barely had any fun honestly. I remember playing it soon after first game and it was just frustrating in so many ways with things they changed...including his character. When you're coming down from 1st game its a huge letdown and when 3 exists its even more of a letdown. I guess if a person doesn't skip 2, 3 seems even more amazing though.

It's almost a shame Lucia has been all but memory-holed. The character had promise, but Lady was the only one that made it out of that mess in future installments.

Her disc was painfully easy though since all you had to do was level up to her 3/4 tier knife and never touch the ground for more than 2 seconds like literally anywhere. You could pretty much stay in the air tossing machetes like shiruken and almost never take damage.

But yeah, dmc2 is definitely the black sheep of the franchise.

Lady wasn't in Devil May Cry 2. Neither was Trish. I do miss Lucia though. I enjoyed her Devil Trigger.

Was Lady 3 then? I don't often mix up 3 and 4 but the finer points of 2 are admittedly foggy since most of what I remember of Dante in 2 is him trying to be an odd mashup of Goro Majima and a pimped out Heihatchi. I remember a perverse game of tag with Lady and her rocket launcher in a library, but at this point I can't remember which game that actually was...

All I really remember from 2 was Lucia's wasted potential, ugly Diesel re-skins, and the nagging feeling that either the environments were too big, like more suited to Drakengard mousou fighting, or there weren't enough enemies given that every fight seemed to take place in what amounted to a football field with 6 mobs in it.

At least Nero's arm grab thing would have been better for closing distance than spamming guns until you could thrust-stab into a weak fight.
