The game alongside Earthbound has better writing(Not story, writing.) than 99% of RPG's to come after it. Considering an RPG is basically judged on the strength of it's story/writing/gameplay, and that gameplay is only minorly different in most turn-based RPG's until the early 2000's, it's pretty reasonable. Snake Eater is also a good game though. I don't think it's unreasonable for either of the games to have won. --- Official ANCIENT Killer. I've played so many PS1 JRPG's. My favorite game of all-time is Wild Arms 2. That game has fucking horrible writing(I still love Liz)/translation(Great story though) FF7, one of the most well regarded RPG's of the era, has pretty shoddy writing/translation. Having good writing in an RPG before the year 2000 was a major accomplishment. It's still super hit or miss today, that's why Persona 5 has gotten the series to the peak of it's popularity. It's not because of the above average story, or the average RPG gameplay. It's because of the diversity of actions and the writing keeping pace with the character interactions that allow the game to flourish. Bowser's Inside Story is passable Avoid Partners in Time like the plague. Superstar Saga was one of the best GBA games, but Partners in Time turned me off of the rest of the series.
