Lets rehearse plural in non-definite and definite form.

There are 6 suffixes for non-definite plural + irregular plural.

-ar:
en kniv = a knife
knivar = knives
kniven = the knife
knivarna = the knives

-er:
en sng = a song
snger = songs
sngen = the song
sngerna = the songs

-or:
en jacka = a jacket
jackor = jackets
jackan = the jacket
jackorna = the jackets

-r:
en sko = a shoe
skor = shoes
skon = the shoe
skorna = the shoes

-n:
ett pple = an apple
pplen = apples
pplet = the apple
pplena = the apples

zero suffix:
ett trd = a tree
2 trd = 2 trees
trdet = the tree
trden = the trees

Some irregular plural:

en gs (/g/-sound)= a goose
gss (Swedish /j/-sound) = geese
gsen (/g/) = the goose
gssen (/j/) = the geese

ett ga = an eye
gon = eyes
gat = the eye
gonen = the eyes

en lus = a louse
lss = lice
lusen = the louse
lssen = the lice

Like you suspect, fransman means Frenchman, i.e., from France. I think the word frankofon exists in Swedish as well, it's just not very commonly used. The common way would be to say that you are a fransktalande kanadensare (kanadick if you want do be extra special).

Yeah, fransktalande kanadensare is the way to go.

Lets look a little at adjectives.

Adjectives often change towards the end depending on what they are describing.

There are generally 3 possible ways.

Singualar en words tend to have the default version of the adjective.

For singular ett words you often add 1-2 /t/ at the end.

In plural you usually take the en version and add /a/.

en st katt = a cute cat
ett stt hus = a cute house
sta katter = cute cats
sta hus = cute houses

st can also mean the taste sweet.

en st glass = a sweet ice-cream
ett stt vin = a sweet wine
sta glassar = sweet ice-creams
sta viner = sweet wines

Im gonna use this opportunity to go over the common colours.

bl/bltt/bla = blue
rd/rtt/rda = red
grn/grnt/grna = green
gul/gult/gula = yellow
vit/vitt/vita = white

svart/svart/svarta = black (note that svart is the same for en and ett words)

orange/oranget/orangea = orange (the fruit orange is apelsin in Swedish)
en orange apelsin = an orange orange

gr/grtt/gra = grey
rosa/rosa/rosa = pink
lila/lila/lila = purple

Some other adjectives:

arg/argt/arga = angry
snll/snllt/snlla = kind
ung/ungt/unga = young
gammal/gammalt/gamla = old
mystisk/mystiskt/mystiska = mysterious
enkel/enkelt/enkla = easy/simple

(den) arga flickan = the angry girl

but

flickan r arg = the girl is angry

The similarities between Swedish, Danish and Norwegian are comparable to the similarities between Spanish and Italian from what Ive heard.

Norwegian is the bridge between Swedish and Danish.

Norwegian and Danish are more similar regarding lexicon and grammar while Norwegian and Swedish are more similar phonologically. Most words are extremely similar in all 3 languages though.

Onion is lk in Swedish but lg in Danish.

Roligt however means funny in Swedish but calm(ly) in Norwegian and Danish.

This is related to a common misconception among young people in the service industry. Many believe that the plural you is just a generally courteous way of addressing someone, which is not true in Swedish, it's something people assume from having taken French or German or something. The proper polite way of addressing strangers would be using their title in third person. Once a friend of mine actually got told off by an old lady because he used ni, and she was quite offended by it.

A difference from English is how you talk about stuff like your own body from an ownership perspective.

In English you say my hands hurt; I have pain in my hands.

In Swedish you tend to say I have hurt in the hands or it is hurting in the hands.

jag har ont i hnderna is the Swedish phrase.

jag = I
har = has/have
ont = hurt
i = in
hnderna = the hands

I have a headache =

jag har huvudvrk (huvudvrk = head ache/pain)

or

jag har ont i huvudet = I have hurt in the head

att = a word that best translates to that AND to. You sometimes to insert it before a verb.

jag = I

fick = got

ligga = (to) lie down / (to) have sex

kvar = remain/left

i = in

sngen = the bed

istllet = instead

fr = tricky word I realize now. It means a number of things like: to, for, about, pro (as in supportive of), pre, fore...

g = (to) go/walk

till = to

jobbet = the job/work

I know some people who claim to understand Icelandic. Personally I don't. But when you read it, and put your big thinking hat on, you can figure out what it says. It's just a fair bit weirder than Norwegian/Danish. I'm fairly certain that it would be pretty easy for Scandinavians to learn Icelandic though, and it might just be that we don't understand it because we never listen to it, not being used to it.

Im glad you think so!

And youre pretty spot on. Icelandic is very similar to what Swedish/Norwegian/Danish used to sound like over 1000 years ago. Iceland started out as a colony settled by Vikings from Scandinavia so they brought their language there and somehow it survived with little change to this day.

As scar says, learning it might not be super duper difficult for us if we put down the work but it sounds very strange. I recognize words here and there but not enough to get the full picture.

I understand the title of their Eurovision 2019 entry for example but not most of the lyrics.

The title is: Hatrid mun sigra (Hatred will prevail).

In Swedish the title would be something like Hatet kommer segra. Mun could be a bit like Swedish m which can mean may.

Yeah, to me most of the Icelandic I see "makes sense" once I've seen the translation. Like, it's very often possible to connect the dots. But it's one or two tiers further off than Danish and Norwegian. Heck I think Faroeish (what's it called even?) is easier to understand and it's really tricky

Prepositions are always tricky! Also you managed to do a very common error that Swedish speakers do: "denna lten" is a tautology of sorts. It's either "den hr lten" or "denna lt". So when you say "denna lten" you sound very very Swedish :)
