I actually remember when a fighting game had all the fighters at release and it wasn't that long ago. I really wanted to get Guilty Gear Strive but I'm not doing this season pass thing anymore. And that's only one genre...

Probably not EA. EA doesn't have a creative bone in its body. It just adapts every scummy tactic that another company thinks of into its arsenal and has no redeeming qualities.

I actually did check and the first described instance is L.A. Noire by Rockstar Games. It may not have been the first instance but that is where the trend starts. Mortal Kombat followed later that very same month as well.

On mobile games it has been around for years but whoever brought it to consoles can fuck right off. I know it wasn't EA or the CoD people

Back in those days what you got on disc was all you were ever going to get. Season passes happened because devs now have the ability to continue to create new content years after release, and for some people a season pass is preferable to buying each new thing seperately

Street Fighter III came out in '97 dude, and it wasn't just DLC, you had to buy the whole game over for the added characters. Season passes are much preferred to that method

The problem is that there's an inherent conflict of interest when it comes to season passes. On one hand, the publisher has your money NOW. If they develop robust content for the season pass they LOSE some of that money for the sake of development costs. So as a corporation you can count on the publisher to: do the barest minimum still acceptable to most folks in order to churn the most profit for shareholders.

Depends on what version of Season Passes we are talking about. I believe LA Noire was the first to use the term, however Batman Arkham Knight was the first to implement a Season Pass without telling gamers what all would be included with it.

People blindly buy season passes and wonder why companies pull this bullshit. If people would stop buying season passes then companies would realize they can't pull this bullshit and wouldn't release half of the content.

Most games aren't worth $60 because most of the time you're not even getting the full game then you have to buy a stupid season pass to get content that was cut which could be another $60.

I am also inclined to say Call of Duty, but maybe that's just because it was one of the more prominent series to have it. Even if LA Noire did have it, it's probably the only Rockstar game to have it.

Hang on you're forgetting how EA's greatest creative achievement. During the PS3/360 era they managed to get in on that sweet sweet pre-owned money by forcing people who bought used games to purchase a pass to use online features in the game.
