I can definitely see the need to remake 1 and 2, MAYBE 3, but not Ishin.

They already did re-make them, though it was mostly just a graphics upgrade.

Been playing Judgement and Digimon Cyber Sleuth, both are games with Japanese voices. Actually picked up quite a few phrases recently!

Games can be good listening practice. There's a lot of Kansai-ben in general in the Yakuza series. I bought Judgment a long time ago for cheap but haven't gotten around to playing it. I heard there will be a PS5 update soon with 4K/60FPS so I'll probably just wait for that at this point. Not sure whether to play Yakuza 6 or Judgment first though.

Actually that makes me realize how weird it is that Ryoma doesn't use Tosaben in Ishin.

Yeah I thought it was going to be an update. Might as well just play my PS4 version. I didn't hear about a different art style but they did cut out/replace one of the actors for smoking weed or doing cocaine or something.

Replaying Disgaea 5 in Japanese, picking up more words. Gonna have to start writing these things down in my book.

Think I'm gonna put Shiki on hold. It's shockingly hard compared to everything else I've tried reading before, and it's honestly frustrating to have to look up a bunch of words every chapter now that I'm used to not needing to do it anymore. I think I'm gonna focus on Bakemonogatari. It's pretty easy, but I really want to increase my reading speed and comprehension more than I want to increase my vocabulary right now.

I thought the Bakemonogatari author was supposed to be pretty hard? Used a lot of wordplay and such.

I tried Medaka Box (the manga) around the first year I was learning and it was a bit beyond me at the time, so I picked something else.

I think the reason people feel Bakemonogatari is hard is because for a lot of people it's likely one of the first LNs they read. I see people often point out that the Monogatari series has 2000 kanji, but what people fail to mention is that it's 2000 kanji over the course of 20 books and any rare kanji will have furigana. Compare that to Shiki which has over 2000 kanji in a single book and just assumes you know how to read them, even if they're the names of obscure historical figures or some random species of trees.

The really tricky part of Monogatari is the constant references to Japanese media, celebrities and shinto/buddhist stuff (though the religious stuff in Monogatari is nowhere near as hard as in Shiki). Not having grown up in Japan most of those references will just go over your head. Just the act of reading it is not that hard, though, since in the end the target audience is teenagers. Shiki on the other hand is a horror novel for adults, and it really shows. Even eroge visual novels like Fate/stay night are easy in comparison.

Okay time to call it a day. Also started using anki on phone but I have no idea what to do on it. Will look more into it soon.

I use AnkiDroid for Android, but the official website works as well. There is no official app for Android, but I think AnkiDroid is really good.

I started doing that for Spanish, however I didn't really keep up with it and now the green owl sends me sad phone notifications.

I took two years of it in high school and two semesters or so in college but I barely remember anything.

If you really want to use one of those apps LingoDeer is much better, but neither is very good.

I wouldn't spend too much time on apps that accept multiple choice answers. They're overly easy and give you a false sense of achievement. If you want an app to reinforce grammar you've learned, Human Japanese or the Tae Kim app. Both are good. You can also do bunpro which is an SRS grammar website that works well on mobile.

Reading Harry Potter fanfiction in Japanese is kinda like reading Harry Potter fanfiction in English. Stations of canon all over.

Fuck's sake, if you're gonna add a Touhou character into the mix, at least change the damn plot, don't just repeat the original story beat for beat. Why is this shit rated so high?

Not anymore. Sanseido stopped providing their services to web dictionaries on September 30.

Unless you're willing to go through the awkward process of using wikitionary you're gonna have to use Yomichan. Get Yomichan and download and add the (sanseidou super daijirin) dictionary.

Yeah, haven't watched too many J-dramas myself. I think Switched was the only one I've watched all the way through. I stalled out at the last two episodes of Alice in Borderland.

I did look that one up when you posted it though.

Netflix seems to have a few, I kind of wanted to watch the Ju-On series.

I was liking it, I just stalled out and never watched the last two episodes or so. One thing I remember being confused about is that I totally did not remember them getting playing cards after completing games, but it comes up as a plot point later.

After the first game they pick one up. I think it's just implied they collected them from then onwards.

This seems to be working really well for my drawing progress topic. Its keeping me on track daily which I'm happy with. So I might as well start a Japanese one too so I can keep my studies up for my class. Hopefully my sensei will see the change I make by using this topic to track my progress. From tonight I'll dedicate 30-60 mins or more every night studying Japanese along side my art drawings.
