That chart is VERY off, because Whiting filed for Bankruptcy in 2020, and just emerged from Bankruptcy in October 2020, so everything before October is waaaay off scale in that chart. If you correct for everything, I think their 5 year high was only like $57, compared to their current price. Oil and Gas could be primed for a big surge though, oil is pushing $60 right now (up from negative $$ less than a year ago), and natural gas is almost at $3, very favorable for US companies. Also Wall Street has been hammering the O&G sector for the last 4 years, trying to get them to focus on making money (rather than increasing debt but growing daily oil production). If companies switch to this business model w/ these prices, the stocks could go way up w/ a lot of dividends given. PDX is probably the safe play. If you want a company similar to WLL though, I would look at PDCE, they are bit healthier. Or if you want a high risk high reward play, look at XOG. People had stop losses set at like 15 cents and lost their shares. If Im understanding correctly anyway. But man, Ive been stopped out of positions and regretted it more times than I actually think they helped. Uber is a recent one of mine. Placed a stop @ a 10% loss, stop was triggered, then a month or 3 later it was up 100% from what I paid for it. Trailing stops are a decent compromise since you have the potential to make a profit and take some of the guesswork out of where you should set stops and when to change them, but you can still get stopped out and its not fun. I personally use options as a way to control exactly how much loss I can take, but still have the potential for payoff if things turn around. I personally dont ever think Ill use regular stops again now that I understand options a bit better.
