I just started Doom Eternal. Playing on Ultra-Violence. I actually don't find the game difficult so far despite not being particularly good at this genre. However, I run out of ammo fast. I don't think the lack of ammo is a problem. It just feels like my weapons burn through everything fast and the difficulty comes from trying to acquire more ammo while dodging attacks instead of fighting the demons themselves.

I use the chainsaw strategically and I'm constantly on the move. Not sure what I'm doing wrong unless I should be exploiting enemy weakness more often than I am. Fun game so far but I can only play it in short bursts.

The game wants you to utilize all your melee abilities, skills, and explosive weapons to the very max. Both your grenades replenish so definitely use them to save ammo as much as you can and don't forget to fire the flame belch for extra armor pickups. Do not get conservative with those gadgets. And yeah exploiting weaknesses like the cacodemon's grenade swallow or the arachnoid's top cannon will ease up those hasty firefights.

There's really not much else to it but that. Keep at it.

Keep in mind that you shouldn't be stingy about using your chainsaw to restore ammo, as it will always regenerate back to one bar. The main benefit from grabbing gas cans is being able to use the chainsaw in quick succession on weak enemies and using all three bars on a strong enemy.

The chainsaw regenerates one fuel every like...30 secs (estimate) which is just enough to kill one dummy enemy and grab its loot.

Frag grenades FTW.

I adjusted to using the chainsaw and ammo issue pretty early. It was a problem at first, but it refills pretty quickly.

Weirdly, the biggest habit I'm still trying to do is dashing. As much Souls games and Hades as I play, you'd think I would be accustomed to that by now.

Once you get the Super Shotgun upgraded, you barely need another weapon. You'll be zipping around the battlefield, setting demons on fire for armor.

I can't say I'm fond of cooldown-based dashing in FPS. I'd rather be able to rocket jump, which would lead to amazing shenanigans with the SSG meathook.

Well, I just acquired the Super Shotgun earlier today. I seem to be doing pretty well. I rarely die anymore unless I wasnt paying attention. Ammo isnt a problem now that I prioritize enemy weakness and use the chainsaw more effectively.

I could do without the platforming segments of the game, though.

It also gets better later, the games plan doesn't work well early on when you only have a couple guns. Sounds like you got it though :)

My ONLY complaint is the chainsaq regen. I dont like it stopping at 1, when almost every enemy that doesn't take 1 charge takes 3. It just feels really frustrating to have to hold on so much to do anything with it to most with no real payoff.

Theres no almost about it. Enemies either take one or three charges. Letting it charge to 3 automatically would be way too easy.

There is at least one 2 charge enemy as I recall. But no, letting it charge to 3 wouldn't be way too easy, that's a slow as hell charge and meanwhile you're getting overwhelmed. It means you can hold off on using it tactically to take out a big threat, or use it frequently to keep stocked on ammo.

Specifically, it was criticized for being too easy later on once you're all equipped. What they did was an actually brilliant way to up the difficulty without resorting to spamming enemies like a Doom slaughter map or making enemies ridiculously cheap.

the reason for the cheat codes/unlockables etc. littered across the stages are for that reason ya kno... you're free to blast away after you've unlocked them but just don't expect progress since they make the game too easy(just like how doom 2016 was)

Yeah I never played the 2016 multiplayer so I never saw Prowlers before. I love their glory kills.

I loved the platforming in combat by about 3/4 of the way through eternal. Those yellow bars that you can swing from? If you jump and then turn you can keep swinging on the same bar forever and avoid stuff on the ground

I never really had that problem, but I did prioritize the ammo upgrades with the crystals. I would say just make use of your entire arsenal, grenades included, and chainsaw fodder occasionally. It also really helps to consider weaknesses, such as shooting a grenade or grenade round into cacodemon mouths. Thats an otherwise spongy enemy down with a single round.

I finished the game. It was pretty good but I hope the devs cut down on the platforming in the next game. Didn't really care for the plot/lore, either.
