I think the ability to be able to fight is an important part of a man. If you don't you'll be taken advantage of in an walks of life. Even if you never have to use your fists, you will at least know that you are dominant against whoever is threatening you. With that said, I need your help. Where is a good place to start?

For self defence? Probably something like Krav Maga that's developed specifically for the purpose. Most forms of martial arts are pretty ineffective in real world circumstances (yes, any type of martial art will give you an advantage over someone who isn't trained, but if that's the bar you can name literally anything.)

I'm talking about if you're in an argument with someone, and you threatened to kick someone's ass. I kind of can't really do that if I don't know how. You might think "why would you do that" but look around, many guys do have to be tough. I want to be tough to be tough

A BJJ guy is going to eat at least one jab while going in for a takedown, the boxer can sprawl, then uppercut. You'd have to be a black belt to beat a skilled boxer.

The way I see it is this

BJJ is cool with grappling and taking things to the ground and all but if you engage with more than one guy, holding one while the others are beating the shit out of you isn't the ideal way to go about things.

Meanwhile with (kick)boxing, you'll probably still be screwed but you've got a better puncher's chance at knocking a dude or more out with one hit leaving you better chances with others. Not to mention the footwork, dodging/evading, and distance management.

If you had to pick one, go with muay thai. It has the most diverse kit. You'll pick up boxing techniques for your hands along with kicks, knees, and elbows. Also a good muay thai gym will have plenty of clinch work so you learn stand up grappling along with how to strike in the clinch.

If you're willing to learn more, pick up BJJ as a compliment so you have options on the ground.

Walk around town. Go to bars. Watch tv. Doesn't matter if it's right or not. It's the world you live in. People will threaten to kick your ass. What are you gonna do? Take it? And be weak?

Then I think you should go to a boxing or BJJ gym and tell the head trainer that you would like to learn how to fight so that you can threaten people. We'll see how badly you really want to learn. Nothing stopping you, most gyms offer free classes.

If one wants to learn how to fight seriously, defense is the first building block. While it's not really a fighting style Krav Maga does build solid defense against the most common attacks. Then from there or BJJ I'd move to kickboxing or Muay Thai.

It kinda makes me sad that I agree with you that boxing would be the best thing for OP's situation.

No one has said that. But your reason for wanting to learn to fight are misguided. If you have the mentality that YOU want to be the person going around threatening people and trying to physically impose your will on them, you will find out very quickly that is the wrong mentality.

Now, if you want to learn to fight to stop those situations where YOU feel threatened, that's a whole other story, and you already have plenty of answers here.

Police statistics say 95% of street fights end up on the ground with a non insignificant portion of those fights involving pants being torn off.

So learn something with a lot of grappling & throwing since that's the most likely scenario.

If you mean fight as in competition then it doesn't matter. Learn whatever you think you'll be good at.

I agree that threatening isn't good, and I don't want to do that. But people do threaten to fight. "you want us to take this outside?" Or "say that one more time, and see what happens" do you hear those lines sometimes? I don't want to be the guy that initiates that, but I want fists is people think they can threaten me.

I'm in my late 30's and the last time I got into a fight was in high school. Even the scary ass guys I knew growing up with haven't gotten into fights since they were kids either.

If you're experiencing "fighting all the time" outside of a sport then you need to find a better social circle.

Slang would be a saying. Fighting is fighting, fighting is not a slang. It's great that you haven't gotten in any fights, but why haven't you? Is it because you give in when somebody threatens you? Is it because you get intimidated by people who could dominate you? And most fights don't happen within a social circle, it's usually with a stranger

But the thing is, those kinds of confrontations are typically all talk and the kinds of people who actually take it outside tend to look like idiots. Not that it really happens unless you're seeking out the roughest places you can find.

If you want to learn to defend yourself thats fine, but even with this post, it's like you're wanting to throw your weight around.
