There are plenty of mma gyms that'll teach you both grappling and striking. Do your research to make sure it's legit and go there.

I agree that threatening isn't good, and I don't want to do that. But people do threaten to fight. "you want us to take this outside?" Or "say that one more time, and see what happens" do you hear those lines sometimes? I don't want to be the guy that initiates that, but I want fists is people think they can threaten me.

But the thing is, those kinds of confrontations are typically all talk and the kinds of people who actually take it outside tend to look like idiots. Not that it really happens unless you're seeking out the roughest places you can find.

If you want to learn to defend yourself thats fine, but even with this post, it's like you're wanting to throw your weight around.

I agree that it's all talk. But I want to be able to have a comeback. Like "that's fine but that is a mistake on your part" or something like that. Should be fine right? Since it's all words right?

Slang would be a saying. Fighting is fighting, fighting is not a slang.

Erm, ok.

It's great that you haven't gotten in any fights, but why haven't you?

Because I don't find people picking fights with me.

Is it because you give in when somebody threatens you?

No, not at all. I don't tend to find myself being threatened but when I have I tend to give it back and it ends there. It doesn't tend to escalate. Not that it happens often anyway.

Is it because you get intimidated by people who could dominate you?

Also no. But I'm also not stupid and wouldn't really be trying to escalate something with someone who could harm me.

And most fights don't happen within a social circle, it's usually with a stranger

I was getting at the kinds of places you go, kind of social circles you keep. Most adults don't tend to find themselves getting into fights.

In my experience it's best to know a bit of striking and a bit of grappling. BJJ or something like that is cool and all until your in a parking that has broken beer bottles in it or a similar situation where going to the ground is a bad idea. Also, if you are grappling with some douche and one of his buddies decides to jump in you are fucked because you are tied up with the other dude.

So for striking arts, Muy Thai is ok. It's effective, but there are things that go with traditonal practice of it that if you aren't going to do them, makes the art less effective. Boxing is good, but it trains you for fighting where there are rules protecting you from certain things.

Personally I think Okinawan Kenpo (one of the older forms of Okinawan Karate) provides the best mix. It has some grappling, mostly in the form joint locks that don't require going to the ground, a respectable amount of throws, and a heavy focus on disabling strikes and bone breaking. This is primarily because it was originally designed for hurting or killing people not tournament or sparring. It was never rebuilt for sport purposes after the war the way Japanese Karate was.

The uppercut is where the fight ends, not the jab, unless we're talking about someone like Mike Tyson.

I've only studied a couple forms. I will say, street fights are very different to fights in the ring, so it really depends on what you want to do

Oh so suddenly threatening to beat somebody up is my fault? Meanwhile you guys are saying in this thread that I shouldn't do the same? That's pretty hypocritical. I think you have killed your own credibility.

Theres no single answer here. My recommendation would be one of the following

Muay thai / bjj

Muay thai/ wrestling

Muay thai / judo

Wrestling, jiu jitsu, sambo, really any grappling based one. Boxing is pretty okay but not that great for actual self defense though more a sporting one. You need both to be a good fighter though

I did tae kwon do and wrestled. Thinking about trying jiu jitsu. I miss competition. I dont think theres such a thing as wrestling for adults. Jiu jitsus the closest.
