They wont go up much.

The cashiers were already being semi replaced by those touch screen boards and they will probably have a good kitchen bot by then.

For the record I would expect prices to rise when employers need to pay more money for their workers. But nobody can explain how or why they expect the price of a hamburger to quintuple with actual math.

I will never stop being stunned at how stupid Americans are about worker rights.

We have been so well programmed to be working automatons.
It's sickening.

We are basically at Communist levels of working for the fatherland with no regard for one's self.

The Cold War ruined us.

where did i say anything about cost of living? The cost of living was already high before the increase. That's WHY they increased it, it wasn't a symptom of the increase...again, stop trying to talk about things you know nothing about.

I still think minimum wage should be raised up and determined by cost of living in each state. $15 min wage in Mississippi gives a ton more buying power than say $15 in Hawaii. Trying to have a sweeping, fix-all number just seems kinda backwards and oversimplifies the entire situation for the sake of having a tidy number that looks good on headlines.

Hopefully that incentivizes people to actually move out into those states. The country would be in a much better state if people weren't trying to cram themselves into the same three cities and actually distributed themselves more evenly.

To get this to make any difference, we need strict caps on the cost of living to make sure this money stays in the bank accounts of the people who EARN it. Raising minimum wage causes corporate businesses to put fewer people on the floor and overwork them, which results in longer wait times for customers. It is a reaction to not only sidestep paying more money to employees, but also to punish the people for voting for a wage increase.

The country has to do something about this first, because when these people sniff a few extra cents in our pockets, they know to increase rent or some other type of mandatory fee.

Not quite true. Some places try to work that in by having minimum wage get adjusted each year based on some maths stuff regarding inflation of certain goods.

That's the equiv of a conservative saying "don't like the pay, just get a different job". And if you're working a minimum wage job, you're effectively tied down. Moving cross country isn't exactly the cheapest thing, doubly so for people who are effectively wage slaves to their jobs.

It absolutely should be set at living wage rather than a particular dollar amount, but it shouldn't be set by entire state. Living wage can vary pretty dramatically for different areas within a state, by a few dollars an hour or more.

If cost of living is spiraling out of control in a handful of cities, trying to artificially design the system so that an infinite number of people can live there is insanity. If raising the federal minimum wage makes it so that somebody could live a much better life in a state that's less populated, that should be incentivized not used as an excuse to further increase wages in the handful of places that are already overcrowded.

By the way, to figure out how much this would affect things prices, youd need to know what % of the products price is due to labor. For a lot of things, you can double the labor cost and barely increase the price to remain at the same profit per unit due to how little labor actually contributes to the cost.

I like how people make the argument that minimum wage bumps could be bad because sleazy companies can exactly counterbalance it, but don't make the connection that maybe there should be regulations on sleazy companies.

I mean, I don't fully blame people. Companies and economics has been mythologized in American culture so people think of them as natural forces rather than man governed systems.

I haven't said anything about the cost of a big mac genius. But if you want to get into the subject of corporate fast food giants they're gonna have a much easier time weathering increased labor costs than smaller regional chains or local restaurants.

It's the same reason amazon is a proponent of a federal minimum wage increase. It's another way for them to box out competition that can't afford to keep up.

To be fair, the effect on prices is a bit overstated, but minimum wage laws can have other negative effects such as less hours worked per low skilled worker, or less workers hired at low skill positions. Overall, the minimum wage does more harm than good imo because it reduces the supply of labor.

Not really. Study after study has shown an insignificant effect on aggregate employment.
What actually, happens, is that the guy who can't get consistent ride to work, or the single mom who has to randomly take days off for "kid issues", or the person who just can't lift the box of frozen burgers for some reason, are going to be the first ones fired.

Overall, the minimum wage does more harm than good imo because it reduces the supply of labor.
Quite the contrary. It increases the supply, while lowering demand. All this does is let employers be more picky, so if you're fucking up or annoying the boss in any way whatsoever (see the mom and car-less guy above), there's a long line of people ready to replace you, probably this afternoon.

Think about how long it took to train you to do your job. That's how quickly you can be replaced.
