for normal unemployment, you could opt to send part of that to the government for taxes, like any other job.

but, they never did that for the extra 600 and now extra 300.

im a bit irked, but we can at least pay it. id rather have not have to deal with it but it what it is

i do wonder how people who are worse off than me who dont know this will bode. not good i assume.

My wife got it for 6 weeks and she usually owes a little. So we will probably break even after my refund.

You think that's bad, just wait until student loan forgiveness becomes $10k of "taxable income" somehow.

I dunno, maybe?
"Deduct income taxes, please" should have been a checkbox when you first applied for UI benefits, if not automatic.

They actually gave you the full $600? They took out 10% and gave me $540 every time.

Didn't the same thing happen during the famous Oprah you get a car episode? I thought I remembered reading that the way the gift with structured from a legal perspective meant everyone in the audience had to pay back taxes on the value of the car and it completely screwed over a bunch of people.

if you collected unemployement all year and did not notice taxes were not taken out, and didn't think you'd be taxed on it, well that's kind of your fault.

also, the stimmies are not taxed.

i dont know about other states, but in california, like i said in the opening post, even if you opted in to pay taxes, they didn't do it for the extra 300/600 you received. only your base UI amount.

i feel like thats going to be the biggest issue for them.

should've paid attention, i guess. not certain how they were issued compared to regular unemployment, but i've also never received unemployment so i cannot speak for how it should appear. but i imagine the $600 and $300 addtional payments were paid separately? also gotta imagine they sent out pay stubs for each payment detailing the totals.

if you need help with taxes, though, lemme know!

the idea of taxing unemployment 'income' is so bizarre.

it's basically just taking tax dollars from the states and moving it to the feds.

looking at the statements, kinda?

like my fiancee got 450 a week. after opting in for taxes, it was 410.
the statement would look like this

Weekly UI amount: 450.
payments:
405
405
300
300
total payment: 1410

something like that

do you also think it is bizarre for you to receive income if debt is forgiven?
