Haven't played a Ys game for roughly nine million years, but this one got lots of plaudits, so I finally caved and imported it. Will it be typical anime dreck or will is rise above (oi oi oi) and be one of the all-time best? Let's find out.

Bought it recently when it was on sale digital. Only one I've played is origin so it'll be interesting when I finally get around to it but it like it might be at least better than average

And it does the anime stuff well. If you're into jrpgs at all and even just semi like anime art styles you're in for a great time

Depends. There are 3 main styles of them. Modern Ys (Memories of Celceta, Ys Seven, 8 and IX) are fast paced action hack and slash jrpgs with metroid-ish elements. They have decent stories as well, with a good bit of dialogue and they are party focused

There is also the top down Adol only games, like Oath in Felghana, Origin, and 6. You only control one person, but they are also really fast paced and have a bit more platforming and still some metroid elements. They're smaller and more compact but they're still great, with Oath in Felghana being the best imo

Then you got the old school Ys 1 and 2. Top down, Adol only, and you attack by running into enemies, preferably diagonally

Oh lastly the music is always, ALWAYS, excellent

Action RPG but because it's a JRPG, it has a slight stiffness to the combat. At least so far. As for Death Stranding, I want to log back in and check on my precious ziplines to see if they survived the cold winter...but I'm not hopeful. It's been over two weeks since we last saw each other.

Story wise imagine if every Link was the same person. Then you got Adol. Ys is the grandpa of all arpgs, that bump combat kinda killed it in the west until the psp though.

well you're in luck then because the game has the standard metroidvania style progression where you unlock shit to get thru previously inaccessible areas

Been enjoying the brisk combat so far, even if these fat-ass walrus things (Organon? Algernon?) are dropping water mortars right on me. So far, only got a little ways in and rescued the tailor, but it's been a fun game. Looks like I should gear up to live on this island for awhile, if I have to collect Skies of Arcadia levels of castaways and build my village.





I did perfect evasion and got bonuses before the game even tutorial'd me about them. Ghost of Tsushima prepared me well.

Whew, did some work tonight. Found some more castaways, got Hummel on my team, build up the town's barricade (why put the watchtower right in the middle where the sightlines are mostly obscured????) and found out how to destroy those friggin' insect nests.

I hated the fishing in this game. It started off fun and easy but the big fish are wrist hurting button mashers.

Ooh, there's a Nameless Ripper (serial killer?) loose on the island. I bet it's Catthew -- we haven't seen him for awhile. Hummel left the party mysteriously, but I somehow doubt a playable character is commiting moider when I'm not looking.

In other news, I fought against the swamp bosses and got a second adventurer tool slot, so now I can leave my gloves and boots on. Stocked up on a ton of hive-destroying spray, too, so now I can explore a lot easier. Should also check local landslides and stuff to see what can be cleared away.

Yeah, that raptor one was kind of annoying. I haven't gotten a game over on the last 2-3 bosses, though, so I guess my upgrades are seeing me through. Adol tends to die, though.

They aren't really connected by story, (think final fantasy but the main character is always the same guy) so I'd say play the ones you think look the most fun.

I quit playing right at the tree-portal near the very end. Looked like an unfun boss rush sorta thing was on the other side, and I've already done everything else worth doing.

Uhhh, I'm only up to Mt. Gendarme, so don't spoil other stuff.

Anyway, did another raid where that dino attacked my crappy barricades. Managed to win, but it cut pretty close.

Ehhh not really a big deal. There are references in the games about previous game characters or events but it never amounts to much other than "hey remember me or that one time?!"

Also Seven takes place after 8

Seems like I finally killed the evil dino with my orichalcum weapons. Still, unless they cut off his head and stuck it on a pike at the gate, I'm not convinced.

I put the PS4 screenshots on a USB. Nothing fancy about it.





Currently trying to beat this KFC reject up on the mountain peak. Three health bars and I have to fight on a bottleneck the whole time? And it shoots a ton of homing AoE attacks that linger for the second wave? As Bill Shakespeare once said in Julius Caesar, Act III: "'This is some bullshit".
