I'm THIS close to buying Sword or Shield, but the difficulty REALLY concerns me. Like I'm fine with a relatively easy game, but I don't want to breeze through without ever having to heal or ever falling under 50% hp or anything

How challenging are these games? I'll also add that I haven't really gotten into pokemon since the og games so i barely know what I'm doing other than weaknesses

sun & moon were easy as shit, this is supposed to be even easier. i liked making competitive teams, but the addition of dynamaxing is completely stupid and paired with the laziness of the overall product, i'm pretty much completely cured of my interest in pokemon

I have 0 interest in PvP, which is what I assume you mean by competitive teams

Dynamax is powerful but in the actual campaign you'll only be using them in dens and gyms. And you don't actually have to use it either, it's just this gen's silly mechanic.

Look up some of the cutscenes, also. They blew all their budget on specific animations, and left none in several major areas.

Casual friendly, easier to digest games in the series. Even @vegy admit that overabundance of unnecsarry puzzles has been a bane to newcomers who just wanted to enjoy a good ol action turn based rng

How old were you when you played the OG games? Pokemon has always been easy if you make a team and don't just use your starter. Yeah it's easy but it's a fun adventure if you just want to see the world and new mons.

Played Sword and managed to get a level 30 Gyrados somehow (can't remember) and made the game so ridiculously easy.

Red and blue was build with little to no lnowledge of facilitating the players to go from point a to be. Most of the problem that plague the original has been fixed in lets go and irecommend who hasnt play it to try it for themselves.

SwSh literally has sections where the computer will "show you where to go" and then walks/warps you next door.

Pokemon as a series is pretty stagnant, difficulty being one of the main reasons. I get that they are focused on kids but I wouldn't be surprised if most kids found them piss easy as well.

You're really not gonna find any real challenge in a mainline Pokemon game. I think the last time I ever had any trouble was the champion back in gen 4, and that's mostly because my team was shit

I have the same experience, gen 4 was the last time I had any issue.

Stupid easy. With all of like...one...MAYBE two difficulty spikes that might side swipe you out of nowhere.

They went all in on the competitive battling scene and hunting pokemon crowd. They essentially went "lulz, we're tired of stories." and just did absolutely whatever with the rest of the game...it barely serves as a tutorial to battling.

It's quite easy but you can make it more difficult by using more than six in a large rotating squad and avoiding grinding in the wild area. I had around 15 or so I was rotating through and I was consistently underleveled slightly for the gyms.

Pokemon has always been easy though, it's nothing new really.

Yeah, there's a small level spike in the middle of the game around the 4-5th gyms iirc.

I would still say XY/ORAS is a bit easier with how they give you a free Mega nuke in the form of Lucario/Lati@s, but SwSh kind of makes up for that by not giving its trainers EVs and IVs. It's a shame, too. SM/USUM showed that the games can have a decent amount of difficulty via the Totem fights and Ultra Necrozma.

I wrote a review of the game, I think you find it on my community profile or just head to the SWSH reviews section. Fairly sure mine is at the top since it won a RotM.

But the TLDR is, its a bad game. Really bad. The story is pretty bland, there's no real bad guys, and if you spend more than 10 minutes in the wild area you'll accidentally be overleveled for the whole game. One of my friends accidentally got to level 40 before even the first gym.

Dynamax isn't particularly fun either. I really liked Mega though so I may be a bit biased.

Oh and the second time I played with a pre-bred team with good stats I avoided all wild fights and only fought trainers and gyms. Ended up consistently right around the same levels as the gyms.

I liked Sw/Sh a lot more than most but man they really need to work on the level curve/balance.

To be fair, every Pokmon game is super easy, and SwSh is no exception. My biggest gripe with these games is the utter lack of sidegame and postgame content relative to most of the earlier entries.

Only titles I ever skipped were Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee and Sword/Shield. No regrets. You're really not missing much by passing on Sword/Shield.

Sword and Sheild are not even remotely difficult, but I still had a great time with Sword. The quality of life updates are some of the best in series history.

Its a pass. Anyone that's looking for a challenge I always recommend the SMT games. Everything is better with them. There's just no competitive side to the games.

At this point I just buy pokemon games as a tradition and not because they are actually fun.

I will agree with everyone here that the game is fairly easy and straightforward. This is not the game to get if you are looking for a challenging game.

With that being said, I still enjoyed the game for the ride. The Wild Area is great. The reason people say that you can easily get overleveled in there is because it's a fun place to explore and you can get lost hours in there looking for new pokemon and exploring the different biomes. If you get the DLC, the Wild Area space is more than tripled!

For me, the most fun of the game is just exploring the beautiful landscapes and seeing what pokemon you're run into. The story is second-fiddle in this game. I honestly had more fun just exploring than following the story with any seriousness.
