Our exhausted bodies moved through the space in unison, back and forth, side to side, corner to corner. When the soldier bellowed At ease! in Mandarin, our regiment of prisoners froze. He ordered us to remain still. This could last half an hour, or just as often a whole hour, or even more. When it did, our legs began to prickle all over with pins and needles. Our bodies, still warm and restless, struggled not to sway in the moist heat. We could smell our own foul breath. We were panting like cattle. Sometimes, one or another of us would faint. If she didnt come round, a guard would yank her to her feet and slap her awake. If she collapsed again, he would drag her out of the room, and wed never see her again. Ever.

One day, one of my classmates, a woman in her 60s, shut her eyes, surely from exhaustion or fear. The teacher gave her a brutal slap. Think I dont see you praying? Youll be punished! The guards dragged her violently from the room. An hour later, she came back with something she had written: her self-criticism. The teacher made her read it out loud to us. She obeyed, ashen-faced, then sat down again. All shed done was shut her eyes.

It enrages me, the treatment of Uighurs in China. Surely everyone knows about it by now and yet nothing is being done about it. What about human rights? The claim is made whenever we're invading yet another oil-rich country that we're doing it for human rights. The hypocrisy is maddening. Another thing I want to address: they imprisoned her over her child participating in a gathering that took place outside of China. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking about how China is going to apply (and already applies) increasingly more powerful surveillance and tracking technology. That combined with companies bending over backwards to please China for even a chance to gain a taste of their large population/consumer base makes China dangerously powerful. All dissent is crushed one way or another. What's possible now makes Nineteen Eighty-Four look like a joke by comparison.

They also defend outlawing unionization and striking, millionaires and billionaires, working 9 to 9 for 6 days a week, and having to pay up front for health care or not receiving any at all (you don't even get to go into crippling debt, you just get nothing). The CCP is Nazi Germany right before they invaded Poland. The whole world knows how fucked up they are, they're literally using an ethnic minority in labor camps, but they have been clever enough and slow enough that people also aren't willing to risk their country over it. Their encroachment in the south China Sea is deliberate, them slowly putting all the port towns in Africa under their control through debt seizure is planned, their deconstruction of Hong Kong was carefully timed, and their border scuffles with India over empty land are shows of power. At this point, they'd have to deliberately fuck up and do something like steamroll over Taiwan and massacre everyone for the rest of the world to muster the energy to care.

Absolutely heartbreaking. This is why it is so dangerous to dehumanize an entire group of people. We think we would never commit atrocities like these but when we're brainwashed enough by political propaganda, media, and peer pressure, we have the ability to enforce cruelty on others.

Stay sharp my friends. We are seeing dehumanization happen in the U.S. as well. Leftists calling Republicans rats and vice versa. We need to seek unity and common ground. Our battle is not with each other. Let us be careful to not call people terrorists who are actually not terrorists. Let us look for the good in one another. Be very wary of how the politicians speak of the opposing sides. Be very aware of what language the media uses to get you riled up against one another. These are the stepping stones to atrocities like these.

Also be very careful of how you use the word fascist. People throw that word around a lot now and rarely it is used correctly. Dehumanizing a group of people because they have different beliefs than you is a form of fascism. Do not be so filled with hate that you are blind.

A genocide implies systematic killings. There is nothing in the article that says Uighurs are being systematically murdered.
