Domestic terrorists led on by a failed president trying to overturn a democratic election via insurrection, violence and attempted kidnapping of senators/congressmen because 10s of millions of Americans hate their own democracy is very arguably more harmful to democracy than a bunch of foreign morons attacking us because they hate our democracy .

These people tried to kill the vice president and bomb the Capitol, and had immediate access to the entire legislative branch. That's a big ass threat that I think people are systematically underplaying for narrative reasons.

This could have been worse than anything any of us could ever imagine.

In that regard, yes, both events were incredibly damaging to the long term health of the nation.

But 9/11 changed the mentality of the nation, at first for good (unity) but eventually for worse. The capitol riots happened after months of incitement by Trump, starting with COVID in March and increasing greatly with the election.

In other words I don't think the capitol riots changed the nation's mentality much. Relatively few people stopped supporting Trump after them and a ton of people are still defending Trump and the rioters.

9/11 didn't threaten the Republic at all. It caused far more loss of life, but it didn't affect our institutions or the continuity of our government.

The attack last week was an attempt to overthrow the government, during the certification of the election, in order to install Trump as an objectively unwanted dictator. They planned to do this through violence, fear, and murder.

The effect would have been the deaths of our elected leadership and a direct blow against electoral democracy. The most direct possible assault on the Republic.

It took awhile for people to realize that the war in Afghanistan was a mistake, unlike the Iraq War where people realized it right away.

To say that the main takeaway from Americans from 9/11 was hating Muslims shows that you are incredibly biased. Like there wasn't a national group hug but people definitely had a sense of confidence and "united we stand, divided we fall" after 9/11.

It wasn't until a few years later that people realized the government really screwed us over with their response to 9/11, including the Afghanistan War and the Patriot Act.

The more interesting thing to think about is how 9/11 was one of the biggest catalysts for 1/6. American fear culture hit an all time high there, and non-Americans (Especially ones that don't look like "Americans"!!!) become scarier, add in the 4 years of a President that FINALLY tells a group who considers themselves the only real Americans that they are in fact THE Americans, and you get what happened on the 6th.

1/20 will probably be more remembered than 1/6 though. >_>
