Board 8 > Mario Odyssey is overwhelming

I just beat the main story and am about to endure the dark planet stuff. But these worlds have so many power moons! Maybe I shouldnt be comparing it to 64 so much but man I just feel like 20+ moons per map is overkill.

If I recall correctly, the irony is they added so many moons to make it feel more rewarding in short bursts of time.

Not to mention, so many of these moon locations are so incredibly arbitrary that I dont know how anyone would ever find them without a guide. Like, Ill spend a solid hour in a map and think I found all the moons...only to find out that I am not even halfway there!

Yeah, the quantity-over-quality design is the reason I'm not as high on Odyssey as most are. Good but not great game IMO.

My thoughts as well. I recognize it's a very well made game but it was all too much.

Also, don't you buy hundreds of moons?

What I would call 100% completion only requires buying one per Kingdom

Then you can buy an extra 119 of them for a small postgame bonus.

Yeah between the Hint Toad and Talkatoo you can learn both the name and location of every Moon

No you cant. They stop after a limit. And they arent even precise. They give you the location but dont tell you how to get it. Its better than nothing but Ill often go to the spot and there will be no moon there because I didnt perform whatever act I need to.

They only stop because half the moons arent available until you beat the game and go back and open all the moon rocks in each Kingdom

the only thing I REALLY didn't like is that you can't get every moon all at once, you have to come back after certain events, even beating the fucking game. I want to do it all in one fell swoop

Same. I don't mind the amount of moons at all.

Still my favorite 3D Mario game. Those controls are so tight.

And the captures are hit or miss but some of them also feel incredible just to play

I played Yooka-Laylee last year and, WOOF, that game is fucking AWFUL. It really put in perspective just how amazing Nintendo is, even with a Mario game that didn't meet my expectations.

The whole "so many moons" design seems like it was meant to work more with playing this as a portable title. Grab a moon or two during a short break/using the bathroom/etc. and then come back later. It only feels overwhelming if you push yourself to do EVERYTHING as part of a long gaming session.

Yeah, I feel like Odyssey didn't sacrifice on quality at all. Who cares if some of the moons suck if the core game is still exceptional and has like 40 hours of fantastic content.

Honestly, I felt like it was a lot less overwhelming. It's the first Mario Game where I managed to get everything. And I do mean EVERYTHING.

I can get being overwhelmed by a game like Crusader Kings, but not so much for Mario Odyssey. Just the simple act of running and jumping is so ridiculously polished and fun that you end up getting more than half of the stuff in the game just by the natural flow of exploring each level.

I'm speaking for the Moon design specifically. Obviously the entire game as a whole is extremely well-designed, as are a majority of the Moons themselves, but...

I would say the latter is worse for me personally, because I tend to lean more as a completionist for most games I play than not, and there can be too much of a good thing. Eventually (and I'm speaking as someone who got a LOT of Moons in SMO), getting rewarded for almost every little thing I do stops feeling rewarding. I wouldn't describe the feeling as "overwhelming" myself, but I do understand what's probably meant by that.

Again, we're talking about a game that I'd happily call a 7.5 or 8/10 anyway and that I freely recognize is flawed almost entirely as it pertains to my own tastes and preferences as a gamer more so than anything else.

... and yeah, the best thing about odyssey for sure is just how fun he is to control - obv this wasn't the fastest run but it was really fun pulling it off the moves
