Im considering looking for remote work because it honestly sounds perfect for me.

Keep in mind that Ive been working retail (and not just any retail- grocery retail) for a very long time. The two biggest stressors in my life are how much I have to drive to get to work (~40 minutes instead of ~15 because my job is awesome, not to mention the fortune I spend on gas and car maintenance) and dealing with idiotic customers bumping into me all day.

But if I can work from home, that would take so much stress out of my life. I feel like there has to be a catch though lol.

It often ends up blurring the boundaries between work hours and rest hours. My dad's worked from home much of this past year, and in practice it meant he was working later into the day than before because there wasn't that clear distinction that leaving the office creates.

The big one is that it can seriously blur work/life balance. It can be hard to step away like you can from a physical location.

It sucks for me.

Working from home was cool for the first few weeks just rolling out of bed and working, but I eventually realized that I liked the structure getting up and going to work gave me.

Im more easily distracted and less productive at home, I also find myself being much more apathetic to my work. This is just my experience though I know some guys love it.

If you have kids it can be a real nightmare.

Kids interrupt meetings. When both parents are working from home, one can take care of the kids during the other parent's meetings. In practice, sometimes that just leads to an argument of which meeting was more important. My wife and I have different schedules. The baby still sleeps with us. I go to my living room and plug in my laptop. A few hours later, my wife gets up and gives the baby his morning bottle. She goes to work, sometimes at the office just to get away from the baby I'm quite sure. She sometimes stays there for peace and quiet. Some days I will leave our home to go my office an hour away for the same reason.

It gets old after a year. Hard to concentrate on work, communicating with coworkers is a pain when they were already irresponsible and lazy to begin with.

Oh and yeah the blurred lines between work and home life are terrible. It feels shitty being reprimanded in your kitchen next to where you would normally be relaxing and playing games.

There's always the possibility of the internet going down. Not just personal connection, but the company's VPN/phone servers have gone down. Any time that happens, you either have to go into the office or just not work.

Depends on the type of remote work you are doing.

For some upper-level work, it can be annoying as you are often depending on other people. Even if you can motivate yourself to not procrastinate at work and stay productive, your coworkers likely would not, and take forever to get back to you. And a lot of remote work is getting through digital bureaucracy of getting this person to approve this, and that person to approve that, then submit to this person for processing. If just one person decides to binge something on Netflix while working, it can slow everything down. And you have no way of getting a hold of them. They almost never answer their phone (if you even have their cell number or if they bothered to forward their office line), and you can't just walk over to their desk/office to hurry them up. And as others have said, if you have crappy internet service and it goes down, that can affect you job performance.

Now, if you are working a lower-level remote job like a call center or other customer support job, I'd imagine it's easier and more ideal. You only interact with the customer who calls or IMs and rarely have to put up with other coworkers and bosses. But those jobs are hard to get and can often bring their own frustrations from dealing with customers from what I've heard.

Ive noticed this as well. The lines between when work begins and ends have been blurred in my experience.

People are definitely more comfortable in contacting about work related matters outside of working hours.

No, it's awesome. Sit in my PJs all day. Have something playing on tv in the background. Play the Switch if it's a slow day.

Only minor gripe is my wife doesn't get to work from home, so she's slightly resentful when she comes home in the evening and I'm on the couch with a bowl of chips

Overall, it's been good for me. The blurring of work and life is already pretty bad for it since I have a work laptop and check my email regularly.

But not having to commute, overdress, or or lose sleep for either pretty awesome.

Even before the pandemic I was working from home at least three days a week.

Sounds like it would be great for me then lol. It would definitely eliminate a lot of what causes me anxiety (like I mentioned, all the driving I do which leads to lost time and tons of money spent on gas and car maintenance, plus dealing with idiots).

Im admittedly a bit of a home-body, and I dont really get cabin fever or feel isolated much. A few years ago I got injured at work and had to be out for seven weeks and so many people said Id get so bored that I wouldnt be able to wait until I went back to work. And that was a lie. I loved every minute of it (except for the bit of pain I was in). There wasnt a single second where I was like gosh Id rather be at work than relaxing at home. Plus I can always go visit my friends or family (safely-distanced of course). Or go to the grocery store.

The biggest problem I see happening would be always expected to be available to work, so Ill have to be careful looking for where to work.
