I was just thinking about this. for me, it was Empire Total War I think. I remember looking around for it at stores and couldn't find it and I went home and then hear about Steam and that they had it. So installed Steam just to get Empire. Steam was so different back then.

Civilization V. I had to explain to my parents how it was a PC game, but you didn't have to buy it physically

either TF2 or AdVenture Capitalist. I didn't have a lot of money at 15.

The latter of those 2 games became the first game I earned every achievement in. I don't recall spending real money on it either, despite it being one of those idle clickers. I have 240 hours in it.

Counter-Strike 1.6.

Purchased a Half-Life collectors box that came with HL/Blue Shift/OpFor and CS and DOD.

Spent a day trying to get the patches working and connecting to the WON servers before learning that Steam had taken over.

Even remember my first match in CS, it was on CS_Assault and I thought I was being cool and clever by sneaking in through the roof vent and they ventilated me instantly lmao.
