Or any other family tree service? If so, find anything interesting?

Someone got me a gift membership for christmas so I've been sorting through it. My grandmother's side of the family is apparently an affluent french family that came to this country in the early 1800s and split in half. One half became really affluent in New England and founded some sort of big arts college, while the half I'm directly descended from went to virginia, joined the confederacy, lost almost all their wealth and forgot how to properly spell their name after several generations lmao

My grandather's I've kind of hit a brick wall because the oldest relative I can find is an orphan from ireland

I'm debating doing the DNA thing but I don't know if it's worth it

I've thought about it, but never got around to it, and then the DoD put out an advisory statement to avoid them so idk.

i did the DNA thing. it told me what i pretty much already knew. i have ancestors in africa, philippines, and europe.

but i was able to download that data and upload them to a medical based dna site and for 12 bucks it showed me if i had any genetic diseases and other stuff.

mostly told me i have a ton of genes that are common in folks with male pattern baldness....
just have to look in a mirror to know that though :(

Yes, a private database filled with the biological data of millions of people, which can be sold to companies and subpoenaed for criminal investigations. All you need to do to collect data on people is to make a social game out of it. Easy.

I learned in genetics class that it's not what you think it is, something like 4% native american doesn't mean you have a native american ancestor, it's more like that's the chance of you being native american to their computer analysis

or something like that

At the very least for me, I know I do have First Nations ancestry and the results reflected that. It also (accurately) identified two locations in Britain that I have ancestors from and also the part of Ontario I had family immigrate to in the 1700s.
