Never played it before. Here's what I know about this game:

  • samurai
  • feudal Japan
  • Mongols
  • probably doesn't have real ghosts

Might've heard other things, but I might be getting 'em confused with Sekiro, so...yeah. Looks like my uncle didn't fare so well against Genghis' well-mannered, well-learned grandson. Swords are mightier than the pen, lol.

It was an enjoyable game. I always get tired of the gameplay loop in these games though after about 30 hours.

Combat is super satisfying when you face like 8 dudes and take them all out without getting touched.

The standoff system, while simple, also feels really good.

Combat's been okay so far, but I'm about this close from having a painful Dynasty Warriors flashback.

I knew the second I went onto that bridge, I was getting thrown off it. The fast-foward button on my sword didn't help!

That's all I've been doing! Out of the 4 main missions you get at the start I've only done 2 and spent a good 10+hrs just exploring and doing side missions.

Once you start to learn the different moves, combat becomes fun. I love the stealth sections, very Tenchu for me, I miss that game!

Yeah, I've also gotten a Tenchu feel from some of this stuff. Given how long it's been since a Tenchu game -- or even some of those similar games on PS2 -- that ain't a bad feeling to have.

So far I've learned a heavenly technique by killing some skill usurper, helped a healer find mushrooms, and saved Yuna's blacksmith brother. Learned a few techniques, too, like increased movement and hearing while in stealth and getting to kill a second dude when winning a standoff. Unless there's some change, I really don't see myself losing standoffs, so that's a nice extra bit o' killin'.

That's a shame, lethal really is how it sounds. But it works both ways, you kill enemies in one or two hits and you die in the same amount. It makes each combat encounter quick and brutal with a high failure rate for both sides

Might do that on NG+ or something. I want to internalize the enemy types, when to switch to different stances, etc. before I up the difficulty.

Have it another 2 hours this morning. Spent most time just exploring the map and finding shrines and the likes. I'm able to kill up to 3 people now during the stand off, I feel like a badass when I cut down 3 people, shoot the last one with an arrow and he swings the sword the clean the blood lol

Finished some side quest like the healer mission and did the archer's story to get his outfit.

It finished around a camp near Azoma Bay and I tried to get into it but I kept getting killed, must not be allowed to go there just yet lol

Burned down a mining camp today to unlock black powder bombs, plus helped a female samurai avenge some farmers. Also found Golden Temple so I could upgrade my sword a bit and stop feeling like my legendary blade was just butterknifing everything.

would recommending bumping it up if you dont find the gameplay engaging enough

Yeah, this upgraded sword is cutting through bandits like a poorly made riceball. I'm curious how the highest difficulty would go, though. I'd assume it'd feel like a buff for enemy archers.

Also, it's only been 50 meters, but I already want to murder this yellow bird that keeps following me.

You should follow the yellow birds when you see them, they lead you to points of interest.

Game doesn't get enough credit for making things like that a part of the environment. Like swiping the touchpad for the wind to point you towards your waypoint.

The bird I had was literally chasing me about 300 meters. I eventually lost it when I did Masako's mission, but found another one that left quickly, so I guess that's better. It must've kept following me because I didn't do something at that lighthouse.

The combat is a decent compromise of easy and engaging imo. It's got nothing on the depth of more hardcore action experiences, but it's a hell of a lot more in depth than something like Assassin's Creed. Kind of like the new God of War in that way. Plus the animations for perfect dodges and perfect parries are top notch.

Just be ready for way too many fucking fox dens lol.

Sometimes the game is just too bright. There's a whole village ahead, but you wouldn't know it from the giant Goldeneye laser about to strike the planet. Oh, my mistake...that's just normal sunlight.

...but sometimes they get it just right.

This dude challenged me to a duel and immediately surrendered. I guessed it would happen, but it was still nice. In a way, he's a lot smarter than the other people I duelled. (They didn't know the trump card of infinite continues...)

Just a normal walk in the woods with decapitated bodies everywhere. Nothing to see here.

i'd throw on Traveler's when roaming around, Ronin's for stealth sections (later Ghost when i got it) and Sakai (clan) for when i'd do standoffs or run in and slaughter. each armor setup had charms specific to that functionality (travelers for max supplies / etc, ronin focused on stealth + damage, clan focused on resolve + damage)

Basically Gosaku's armor quest was unlocked when you went to the second part of the island, which added a few bandit areas. Seems like you already cleared those bandit areas prior to getting the notification that they were even added, which is funny.

If you tried to do every bandit camp before going north (like I did), you will find you can't do 3 or 4 of them until you raid the caste to save Shimura.

When all Masako's missions ended up being "let's talk to the guy and NOT kill him this time, Pts. 1-7", I knew I'd probably come to blows with her. I'm glad she didn't end up biting the big one, though, even though I brought her down to zero health. The "twist" about the monk being involved was a mite shallow, however -- they kept throwing him into a bunch of scenes as we're supposed to care about this guy. Even the "the family member who died didn't really die and is the mastermind!" twist was guessable in an Agatha Christie sort of way. I was betting on the monk being the mastermind, though.

"I'm significant," said the dust speck.

I slaughtered this dude and the bird is still perched on his shoulder. Kinda funny to me.

Found Tomoe and she jumped off the cliff after saying something cryptic about the sensei. Doubt she's dead...I mean, I'm probably gonna get her bow at the end of this quest, so that'd kinda suck. Curious to know if the sensei's hiding anything (maybe in the "she's like a daughter to me" vein).

Uncle didn't care that I used the hwacha, so now he's complicit in my code-breaking actions. I don't want to hear any grousing when the campaign ends about how "you did good, but you shouldn't have stabbed all those enemies in the back". If we were smart, we'd lug this hwacha around and burn the other coastal ships doing the blockade.

Almost done with Masako and Ishikawa's stories, but predictably, their targets ran north into the final region of the island. Jin's old caretaker actually died at a cemetery after hallucinating him as his father (who had an affair with her?), so...maybe I feel bad about making her handle all those hallucinogenic plants. I'll pour out some hemlock for her.
