Person A). Only drinks to get drunk socially, can go days or weeks without drinking but when they do, they are waking up to fear of checking their unread messages, bank account, and a massive hangover. This is perfectly okay and what we call a social drinker!

Person B). If person B gets a sip of alcohol, all hell breaks lose and loses total control! Person B chooses not to drink alcohol because of this. This person is perfectly healthy and we should look up to them.

Person C). Maybe has 2-3 drinks most days, maybe a couple drinks after dinner or likes having a drink during lunch. Person C, rarely wakes up with a hangover and has zero issues with alcohol impacting his or her life. Although this is completely normal in other countries, in America this person is labeled an alcoholic!

I'm Person D). Wakes up in the middle of the night to take a shot of hard liquor. Wake up a few hours later and takes another shot. Around lunchtime I grab a Truly or a Pabst Hard Seltzer from the convenience store and drink it while I take a walk through the woods and toke up. Get home, start drinking proper. Mixing two shots of hard liquor for every six ounces of seltzer water. Proceed doing this until bed. Probably end up drinking three seltzers, so that'd be 12 shots worth of booze in the latter half of the day.

Another topic about alcoholism TC? If you didn't like the responses in the others, why do think this will be different. Excessive drinking is a problem, regardless of the label slapped on it. It also doesn't matter what poor health choices others make, they have no bearing on the alcoholic's decision to continue down their self destructive path.

What was your motivation to make this topic? Did someone call you an alcoholic? Do you think you're an alcoholic? If you think you're an alcoholic, you probably are. Alcoholic isn't necessarily how much you drink, it's about knowing some part of you enjoys drinking perhaps a little more than you'd like. Functional alcoholic doesn't exist, it's another way your brain tricks you into drinking more. If you are an alcoholic, there's two choices you can make. You are either okay with it or you're not okay with it. You just need to figure out what works for you. Some people drink a ton and that's just what they do. Apparently a lot of construction workers drink a lot. Some people stay completely away from alcohol. For me, I just set limits on myself. Like, I'll only drink if I have nothing important I need to do the next day, limit my number, or determine I'm feeling nicely drunk and whatever I'm holding at the moment I'll decide is my last drink for the night.

If you drink multiple beers a day you're probably at least a borderline alcoholic. Drinking isn't typically an every day activity.

Person A and B aren't alcoholics because they're not addicted or dependent on it. You're an alcoholic when you drink constantly.

I wouldn't necessarily say C is an alcoholic but they are very much walking on the line if they haven't crossed it. Most people I know who drink everyday get the shakes if they don't. I would say that's a pretty clear indication of a problem.

Person A has a binge drinking problem, person B knows they have a problem and wisely abstains

Because when you're not addicted to something, you don't think about it everyday and notice immediately with a huge mood shift when it's taken away.

I'd define an alcoholic as someone who gets drunk regularly, and can't seemingly function without alcohol. Having a bev or two after work isn't an alcoholic. Carrying a pocket flask to pour into your coffee at work is.

I love booze but I never feel like I need it or cant function without it. There's nothing tastier than a Manhatten. Maybe I'm just a snob but I'd also take being sober than drinking cheap, shit booze. If the end goal is just to get pissed and forget everything that's probably an alcoholic. Some people are just fine to handle 2 drinks and relax without turning into a drunken mess. I've known proper alcoholics who after a few drinks can't control themselves and turn into a aggressive, incoherent mess.

Id consider person C on the minimum end of alcoholism. And mostly just by pure definition. If youre talking about light beers, yeah, that person is almost definitely fully functioning with next to no effect on their work productivity. Obviously not the healthiest habit in the world but a couple of beers isnt throwing your life into a spiral. That amount of alcohol isnt too far off what the British navy gave out as rum rations, which was just enough to give the sailors a bit of a kick for fun.
