I have a bunch of Steam games and a laptop, but my laptop always gets super hot after playing for a little while, so I tend not to play many Steam games.

I know I can do something with a Steam link, but pretty sure this still runs it from my laptop, so it wouldnt help my heating issue.

so is there a little mini computer that is powerful and affordable enough that I could build, hook up to my TV, and run Steam?

no, buying a full on PC is not an option

I don't think you are getting many answers because it depends on what games you are playing. Steam as simple games that can run on anything , and then they have complex games. So what are you looking to play and what are you looking to spend.

Youre not running current gen or even last gen games off anything the size of a pi. Your best bet is a mini PC stick but those will only run light weight games.

Im not married to playing current gen necessarily. I do have a PS4 pro so I could just play current gen there. One game though for sure is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, as an example. I played the first one running on my laptop and the laptop got hot pretty quickly and remained hot throughout my play. So just want to avoid playing too much on it and frying the innards.

So maybe PS2 era or older, MAYBE PS3 era if there was something that could do it.

up to $500 budget

Or maybe nothing would be worth it versus just shelling out for a desktop?

For $500 you can build a pc that would be able to decently game at 1080p. Unfortunately, getting a graphics card at this time for the right price is very tough and that's gonna be the bulk of the cost.

I don't think there are any gaming prebuilts around $500 though.

No, that's way above his budget. It's already past $500 and still doesn't include the cost of the components not in stock ie GPU.
