I was wondering the same thing. Of course, I'm being shown all of the lowlights, so maybe there's more craftiness to this than we're witnessing in a twenty-minute video. And I guess you could argue that if you watch speed runs in the regular category regularly, you may easy gloss over the things that would be nigh-impossible to do without sight if you're simply watching the speed run for the speed run's sake. But, still, some of these examples are glaring red lights.

Love the guy who said he'd donate $50 if he'd redo the bowser stuff without facing the screen and while having a blanket over his head. I didn't believe he was actually blindfolded already, but that was the definitive final nail in the coffin even if you were a believer up to that point.

Tbf, a legit speedrunner wouldn't even interrupt their own pb-pace run for a $50 request. (Unless that came at the end, I haven't had a chance to watch yet.)

Yep, I could see no legit reason he wouldn't attempt it. He didn't have to give up $50 if he couldn't do it, and it wouldn't have taken very long based on how quickly he pulled it off the first time. The only reason I see for him not to do it is he knew he got caught by someone and didn't want everyone to know he was a fake.

I've heard that it was removed because they consider the term "Blind Playthrough" ableist.

So I heard that one of the easiest ways to tell if someone is faking vision loss is to flash money in front of them. No matter how well they practice ignoring other telltale signs of seeing things, it's extremely difficult for human beings to ignore noticing money just because of how ingrained it is for us to recognize its importance.

I feel the same thing happened in that video when he saw a 1up in Bowser in the Sky. He immediately twitched and made a move for it, realized what he had done, and then ignored it and pretend he didn't see it. Like with money, extra lives are just something we're sort of trained to seek out and are difficult to pretend to not notice.

This was a well put together video, it's the only one on this guy's channel? Will need to keep an eye on it.

I got this vid in the recs, which is equally as ridiculous.

Having done some blindfolded runs before, not of this game but of others, I can absolutely guarantee that this guy wasn't playing blindfolded for probably any of it. When you can't see where you are, you pretty much lose a precise idea of where you are nearly immediately until you can confirm it with some kind of audio cue. When he says "that was all muscle memory" it's like insulting to my experience that I'm supposed to believe that.

Speedrunners of SM64 absolutely do train themselves out of seeing the 1-ups, given that they are completely worthless to pick up even in a casual run, and extra worthless and a waste of time in a speedrun. I wouldn't be surprised if some SM64 runners didn't know all the locations of 1-ups in BitS because they're just that useless. You skip them and you don't even think about it.

Of course, the one time you MIGHT be interested in seeking them out is when you know you only have one life left and you don't want to do the trick to get into BitS again. This really shows just how non-serious of a runner this guy is though. 1) If he's this good, then getting back into BitS is no big deal. 2) If he's this good, he shouldn't be dying this frequently. 3) Of course, he's seeing through his blindfold anyway... and yet he's STILL died this much.

Yeah like I might be able to navigate my house blindfolded but its not muscle memory

Yeah, it'd be very similar to navigating your house blindfolded - main difference is you'll be primarily using tactile cues instead of audio cues. But you'll follow the walls and try to look for reference points that tell you where you are.

I also vouch for Karl for good videos.

It also helps that he is a great speed runner in his own right. So his commentary tends to be insightful.
