Master Chief Collection on Steam for 40% off sounds like the best deal yet for the finally-complete collection

So I am thinking about getting it.

But how did it age? will a first time player appreciate it in 2021? or is it just "generic FPS" in today standards?

It's far above a generic FPS imo, the freedom and semi-open aspects are great and it's much less corridor-shooty than a lot of others. No knee high wall stuff either. The weapons feel great and interesting and the world and aliens are cool and inventive, I'm sure some of it is a bit dated but overall it's still a lot of fun imo. Also a really good score. Worth a shot for sure!

Played some Halo 1 when the collection came out and it holds up well. Vehicles are still rough to drive

I think if anything I've grown to respect the franchise more and more.

Like as a kid it was fun fucking around with my friends and driving the vehicles, but now I can really appreciate things like the level design and lore. Not to mention all the secrets and extra challenges that boost the replayability.

Also Halo 3 ODST is severely underrated and I'll take every opportunity to promote it when I can.

The games all hold up well. They're good shooters that know what they are.

Halo 2 on Legendary is virtually unplayable. Hiding in corridors for 5 minutes and shooting for 5 seconds ruined it thanks to the Jackal Snipers in the Westpolis and the Delta Halo levels.

As long as you consider canon to end with Reach (well, 3 if you're going chronologically rather than release), yes. 4's campaign was still fun enough to play, but the plot turned to crap as soon as 343i took over the reins.

Actually, the film/miniseries Forward Unto Dawn was good, and that was post-Bungie. But definitely avoid any novel by Karen Traviss. They can be entirely summarised as "Something interesting is happening somewhere, but let's ignore that to demonise Dr. Halsey some more"

the multiplayer holds up fantastically

i am not as enthusiastic about the single player campaigns, but that's probably just my own personal taste changing

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

It's awesome. Some people complain about the aging on Halo 1, but I still find it an awesome experience.

As someone who just played through and beat them all recently, the only one that struck me as kind of booty was Halo 3: ODST.

Halo Reach was really good too.

As far as multiplayer goes, unfortunately not enough people to have the most fun on it and rarely any mics used, but it's still fun. Halo 1 multiplayer is very dated though.

I have 606 achievements and 5710 gamerscore from the collection lol!

lol. They are tough, but it's hardly unplayable. It takes fast reflexes and some trial and error on positioning if you aren't eagle eyed.

Halo is great when it has sweeping outdoor locations. The interiors are so dull though. And don't give me the tired "but the aliens made the interiors repetitive to confuse invaders" argument.

Halo 3 was some of the best online play of its era though.
