I remember I had just played Oblivion and FO1&2 right before the announcement of FO3 and totally geeked out when it finally came out

I thought what an incredible mix here lol, they really made this THE Capital Wasteland

Then NV game out with a midnight limited edition set with a pack of cards and poker chips

Its a shame the game felt.. janky.. and loose throughout, I thought it was really packed with everything it needed to be 5 stars throughout. I prefer FO3 to this day for the amount of immersion behind its bland colors - but NV still remains a favorite for how much heart and character it has

I've always thought stuff like this was ridiculous, since RLM's prequel videos (not great movies, but the RLM takes are just ridiculous)

Just watched the whole video, really made me want to replay New Vegas, a lot of the connections between the quests and such totally went over my head. To be honest I always enjoyed the gameplay of Fallout 3 much more, but now realize a lot more thought the the inner world logic went into the making of New Vegas. Its still crazy a game so deep only had an 18 month development cycle.

New Vegas is great, and my favourite game of all time, but it's not perfect, no matter how much people (including me) meme otherwise

That said, I do agree with the general sentiment of the video. It's surprisingly deep once you get into it

Theres a difference between hating on something and not buying into the blind circlejerk around it. NV has always had some obnoxious fanboys. Fuck I literally saw someone say it was the best writing in modern fiction and made ASOIAF look bad. Not to mention that everyone overlooks its massive amount of bugs then whines about Bethesda bugs

people are more willing to forgive bugs if the rest of the game is that good. I agree that it was in a sorry state and can still be a bitch though. I think NV is looked at especially fondly because it followed fo3, which comparatively speaking just isn't that deep at all, or in my opinion, fun

I think people feel less inclined to give Bethesda's later games a pass as the writing, story, rp mechanics etc were chopped and tossed to the side after Oblivion and New Vegas brought them back so something they can overlook. People jerk them both too much though tbh, not just New Vegas.

I love the Fallout games, and thoroughly enjoyed NV..but at the same time, I don't understand why people cream their pants over it. Maybe I missed something when I played it. I remember at the time I thought 3 was better for some reason.

You mentioned it in the context of BGS games and alongside Oblivion so it seemed like you thought it was. If NV was developed by BGS and not Obsidian people would not have given it a free ride on its bugs

Correct, because it would have bad writing and player agency/impact

The point was more that they all have bugs, but the one Obsidian made had a story and RP people liked. Bethesda had this as well in the past with Oblivion and Morrowind so the bugs in those are often ignored or similarly dismissed as well. Their fallouts and Skyrim's are ridiculed much more as they just abandoned any sense of what they used to have.

Nice find, TC. As much as Fallout 3 deserves its criticism, I'd much rather link to a positive video on what NV does right (as opposed to a more negative video on what FO3 does wrong) in those moments when I can't be arsed to defend it myself. Hbomberguy has a particular knack for zeroing in on and elaborating upon my impressions of both games, and it's nice to now have a full-length vid on NV instead of just briefly touching on it at the end of the FO3 vid. I particularly appreciate him touching on how intertwined NV's world is designed to be, and how seemingly-innocuous fetch / delivery quests often lead to a better quest / larger part of the narrative. I wouldn't have minded him touching on the more well-developed structure of the worldspace itself (settlements exist in logical places near supply lines, deathclaws and sentry bots aren't just randomly roaming the highways, things like that), but you can only fit so much even into a 90-minute vid.
