They added so many new types. I tried one of the newer games a couple years ago because I wanted some childhood nostalgia. Instead I just felt like the angry old man confused by change. How the hell am I supposed to keep track of which type is weak against what when theres like 200 combinations now.

There are exactly 3 new types since the very first games, with two of them being from the almost very first games

A lot of Gen 3 Pokemon are cool, I can't remember most of them though

I guess I just remembered incorrectly. Really felt much more simple when I was younger. Probably just because I actually watched the show and was more engaged with the universe as a whole so I knew the strengths/weaknesses better.

Steel, Dark, and Fairy are the only "new" types. Steel and Dark were introduced in Gold and Silver and might as well be OG. Fairy exists to shit on dragon kids.

Yep. They already started on Gen 2 before the anime came out.

Why is Mew listed after Mewtwo in the Pokedex?

IRL: Mew wasn't programmed into the game until near the end after debugging and secretly. The 150 were you're obtainable Pokemon while Mew was to remain a mystery. Of course then Mew became an event Pokemon.

In-Universe: Mew was deemed extinct with only a tissue sample found, used to create the clone Mewtwo. After Mew was actually found to still be alive, it was finally recorded into the Dex.

That's actually a pretty decent explanation. I assume that in-universe the ability to revive Aerodactyl, Kabuto, and Omanyte was discovered earlier than some of the other Kanto pokemon, or at least around the time the PokeDex was created?

That's a safe assumption considering the Kanto fossil pokemon were rounding out the end of the dex entries starting from 138 Omanyte to 142 Aerodactyl. After that you have Snorlax, there was only 1 of it in-game, the rare Dragon-type/pseudo-legendary line then the Legendaries.

lets be real though. In Gen 1 the move pools were all shit and most Pokmon didnt have a lot of varied options.

in practice this means youre not actually engaging the type chart as broadly as you typically are in modern games, so I can see how it would be overwhelming for some peeps.

In Red and Blue, before you got to Cerulean City, most attacks were normal typed, with a smattering of exceptions across a handful of Pokmon. Typically, peck, double kick, poison sting, and leech life were the only ones youd have to deal with iirc. Though the player also had access to Butterfrees confusion and Pikachus thundershock.

compare that with all the options and interactions that youll be up against in the same timeframe in modern Pokmon. >_>

RBY are great pick-up-and-play experiences, and the glitches are half the fun of playing them. You can nab a level 100 Gengar before Brock lol

I liked it better that way, tbh. Now it's kind of overwhelming, like you said. I still have no issue playing and keeping up with the new games. I just liked when it was closer to 500 Pokemon than 1000.
