A 27-year-old father of two from the UK died of cancer months after he had to beg for an MRI scan amid a slowdown during the coronavirus crisis. Sherwin Hall, of Leeds, West Yorkshire, died on Dec. 3, following an illness that began more than a year earlier. Hall first began experiencing groin pain in September 2019 that subsided and re-emerged in January and was given antibiotics both times, he wrote on a GoFundMe page back in May. He thought he was feeling better, but then the pain returned with a vengeance in March, when he experienced pain in his right leg and buttock, and a hard lump by his rectum, he wrote. He returned to the hospital, where doctors were convinced he had a sexually transmitted infection. It didnt matter that I told them I couldnt have an STI, he wrote. They were so convinced that I might have one that I began to believe it myself and started thinking maybe I had picked it up from sitting on a public toilet. I had so many blood tests and swabs. They were all clear. Meanwhile, the pain was so bad that I kept going back to the hospital, begging for a scan to see what was wrong.

Then another doctor assumed he had prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate gland, and prescribed antibiotics once again. I told them I thought they were wrong, but no one would listen, Hall wrote. I did my own research and knew it was something else. I kept begging them in April and May to give me an MRI scan, but no one would listen. Both my GP and my consultant told me that I couldnt get a scan because scanning services were slowed down because of the coronavirus. By this time, my pain was so excruciating and I felt so unwell and so exhausted that I was almost suicidal. On May 26 several months after first experiencing symptoms Hall was finally given the scan, which revealed a 5.5-inch mass in his pelvis, he said. He also had 30 lung tumors, the Sun reported. When Hall died, his son, Sancho, whom he shares with wife LaTroya Hall, was only 9 months old, the Daily Mail reported. I am devastated. I have lost the love of my life, Hall said in a statement. If Sherwins cancer had been found earlier, it is likely he would still be here today. He would want me to do everything I can to prevent other families suffering as we have. It worries me that the Government and NHS leaders continue to say cancer services are back to normal, she said. Our familys experience has been that, even now, this is simply not the case.

man, i can relate so much to this

as somebody with ibs, seeing doctors is a fucking nightmare (i.e. they're completely unhelpful and devoid of any sympathy and empathy ime)

some gems include:

"bleeding out of your butt is completely normal"

"but you can't have coeliac - you're asian"

-

they only ever try to seek the solutions that'd come at the expense of the absolute least amount of effort on their parts

sorry, don't mean to make this topic about me, but damn, i get so angry over this kind of thing

All of this because people are afraid of a less than 1% chance of dying. I know many families who've had covid and say it wasn't even bad. The flu was also a risk for people with health conditions and the elderly. But no...this man had to die because we've allowed fear to rule our lives.

I thought universal care was good over there? What the heck
conservatives in the UK follow a similar plan to the conservatives over here in the US, they break good social systems and then scream about how those broken systems dont work and need to be replaced with privatized systems. they've been systematically destroying the healthcare system for years.

Actually it's not stupid. The article states that there was a slowdown with MRI's due to the coronavirus. It's literally in the article. If the hospitals cared more about people like this gentlemen who actually have a terrible illness instead of the people who have a less than 1% chance of dying, then this disaster would not have happened. It's not mutually exclusive. It's a case of bad doctors for sure. And the reason why they are bad is largely because they bought into the covid panic.

My grandmother died from gall bladder stone removal surgery. Everyone knows gall bladder stone removal is low risk. Her surgery came out to be a success but then she suffered for 3 days, bleeding internally and now one knew what was happening. The doctor who did the sergury never came to see her once and the nurses were very rough with her. When they found what was happening, she was already unconcious in ICU and she never woke up again

My gran was very lively. Didn't have any other illness except for high blood pressure.

It's been maybe 15 years now and I'm still very angry they took away my gran just like that.

The doctor also rushed my gran to do the surgery because he was about to go on holiday.

Yep, and it's even influenced by whether the patient is male or female and the colour of their skin and ethnicity as well.

Black women and South Asian women are two of the most discriminated against groupings in medical care.

there's other things that the covid causes other than the 1% chance of dying:

being on a ventilator
reduced lung function
blood clots
parkinson's like disease
fatigue (moreso than flu).

lungs don't regenerate :( and for the record I DON'T WANT THE SICKNESS the shit's scary.

Again, very low percentage for all of those outcomes. If you have underlying health issues, then yes, take precaution.

No one wants to get sick. I understand that the thought of any of those listed outcomes is terrible. But I also understand that we cannot allow fear to take hold of us. Our response to this virus has produced results worse than the virus itself. This man is not the only case. Japan has had more suicides last month than coronavirus deaths in the entire year. We need to see what we are doing to ourselves. In my job, I talk to many many people. Old, young, middle aged, etc. I've seen and heard the toll our response has taken on them. People who've lost their livelyhoods, jobs, etc. Family members dying alone in hospitals because they aren't allowed to see them.

Risk is a huge part of our lives. And yes, every day you walk outside, you are taking a risk of catching covid. But is the risk worth it? The data is out there. We know the mortality rates. We know the percentages of people who needed to be on ventilators. Is a less than 1% chance of dying enough to stop you from going to visit your dying grandmother in the hospital? Is it enough to tell a man who has cancer that he cannot receive treatment? Is it enough to tell people that they should give up their means of providing for their families?

Is it enough to kill your desire to live?
