https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election-2020/hillary-clinton-biden-electoral-college-vote-b1773891.html

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton among New York members of the Electoral College cast the states first electoral vote for Joe Biden.

The former US Senator was joined by former president Bill Clinton and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who are both among the states 29 electors to cast their ballots on 14 December, as the voting body across the US formally selects the winning presidential candidate. The governor also is president of the states electoral college. The states 29 electoral votes were awarded to Mr Biden.

Following her vote, Ms Clinton renewed her call for the dissolution of the Electoral College, with the winner of the presidential election determined by a popular vote.

I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office, she said in a post on social media.

But while it still exists, I was proud to cast my vote in New York for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, she said.

Following the general election in November, electors convene in their respective states to cast their ballots, which are then counted by the President of the Senate in a joint session of Congress.

There are electors relative to the number of members of the House of Representatives and Senators in each state, plus three electors for Washington DC. A winning candidate must receive at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

Ms Clinton cast her ballot four years after the president won the 2016 race, though she is among electors who will deliver the likely final blow to the presidents attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Stacey Abrams, whose voter registration and organising efforts in Georgia helped flip the state to a Democratic presidential win for the first time since 1992, also cast a ballot as a member of that states Electoral College. The states 16 electoral votes went to Mr Biden.

Because it's not something that just be just be decreed into being because you're mad about it.

There's a defined process to getting this done, but nobody wants to actually bother with it.

Regardless of whether you support abolishing the EC, a presidential candidate being an elector seems like a conflict of interest.

Regardless of whether you support abolishing the EC, a presidential candidate being an elector seems like a conflict of interest.

The electors don't really have any power aside from casting the "vote", of which most states require them to vote for who wins the election. Its entirely a publicity thing. In 2016 Bill Clinton was an elector (and, had Trump won NY in 2016, Bill Clinton would have been required to vote against his wife)

Bill is an elector this year as well. I think Cuomo is too.

Because faithless electors are a thing and someone literally having run for an opposing party when combined with the ability to break with the popular vote is a clear conflict. This isn't rocket science.

the most annoying thing about the electoral college debate is that most people would flip flop on their position if the roles were reversed

few actually know or care why the electoral college is a thing

i suspect the best approach is to empower states to run more of their own affairs, so that a 4 year presidency doesn't cause so much panic in the half that didn't vote for the new president, with the president still having authority to enact things that should affect us all (marijuana decriminalization, national security, etc)

but i also don't know enough about the pros/cons to each argument, so meh

Ah yes, the fear that Hillary was actually going to give her electoral vote to Trump. Very conflicting.

I was thinking more in a situation where the state actually flipped red and she had to decide whether to follow the popular vote or not. This isn't a republican/democrat thing... I'm suggesting that nobody who is or has previously been elected should be an elector for the same justification above.

New York selects electors based on who wins the state. If Trump had won, Hillary would not be an elector.

In most states the slate of electors is determined by the winning party. Hillary would not be an elector for NY if Trump had won

Yea, most every democrat still wants it this year, and granted Biden won both votes but still, its something Dems have wanted. An idiot like Trump winning because of the EC just made the issue much clearer and caused many to push harder, which in itself is hilarious because the EC supposedly exists in part to prevent idiots like Trump from getting elected.
