Why is there $16k in upgrades for a game anyway?

It can be much more than that, that's how these gacha games are designed. In fact, most of these companies make contracts with Youtubers to have them portray themselves as "whales", that is, a player that spends vast amounts of money on a game's loot boxes or other RNG content. Whenever you see one of these whale Youtubers and they advertise one of these games during the first 10 seconds of the video, they're probably in on it.

Then kids go on Youtube and see titles like "I spent $500 on rolls, look what I got!". Then it shows the guy obtaining some strong character or upgrade or w/e, and kids are like "I'ma do this! Maybe I'll be lucky and get it without spending that much!" and end up blowing tons more than intended because they can't stop.

It's a vicious cycle, one that is purposely supported and encouraged by these corporations.

I mean I definitely feel bad for that family not because Christmas is canceled (as that celebration is by no means a necessity), but because now they're not able to pay their mortgage. I would hope that Apple would be kind enough to allow a temporary refund, and have them pay it back in increments. Maybe have George do chores around the house to help pay it back.

And for God's sake I hope this was an eye-opener for them to keep a closer eye on their kid.

The parents probably weren't checking credit card debts because they could of had them paid off, and because of the pandemic (like the story mentions) maybe they didn't think to check their cards because there's no reasonable suspicion that their card is being used without their knowledge.

Anyone defending this is pathetic. They weren't just lazy and didn't try to remove the charges, they were told by the banks that it was likely fraud and got caught up with the time it takes for a bank to check the legality/authenticity of charges to a card and by the time they heard back 60 days had passed. The story literally says this.

Anyone defending it and saying she somehow "deserves" this for something that should be a minor misstep as a parent is being ridiculous.
Its a "minor misstep" that is gonna cost them $16,000 and their mortgage because they let a 6-yo have a tablet completely unsupervised.

Ridiculous that she compares this to drugs, when for a kid that young, the real issue is probably that they fail to understand the notion that "game money = real money", & just want more powerups/characters. Either way, it just seems like tempting fate for this sort of thing if you leave card information on a device that children can easily access.

nah shes works the father is a legit stay at home dad. Its the fathers fault in this case. Also, people still wonder why i choose to buy itunes cards instead of linking my credit card. This shit can happen to any parent. Apple just changed their app store settings in a fairly recent update and hid them behind screen time settings when before they were in the app store settings, at first i thought they were completely gone before eventually finding them.

People.... if your going to let your children buy stuff, use a pre-paid card. Never show them that you have an actual credit card. At least with pre-paid cards there is always a limit to how much you can spend.

Hell, I try to never attach my credit card to anything other than paypal, and even that has a 1k limit on it.

This topic is wild. While I can agree these microtransactions are predatory and you shouldnt be able to spend that much on a game, it fucking blows my mind that a few people are trying to absolve the parents of any responsibility here.

Like if I make an in-app purchase I have to use my thumb print to confirm, AND I get an app notification any time my credit card is used, AND I scan my CC bill every time I pay it. Any one of these three basic ass things any functioning adult should do could have prevented this, or at the very least caught it well before it snowballed into 16K of debt. I truly dont understand how anyone can be so careless.

As predatory as these are, the concept of keeping kids aware of these potential money sinks isn't new. On my day (and hers) is was running up the phone bill on 1-900 numbers. In the age of the ipad with linked cards, it seems even more important to get that lesson learned before you kid learns to unlock your ipad.

She should pay it back, but given current circumstances and the delay in getting resolution, maybe a payment plan should be offered by the bank. Meanwhile we get another object lesson in child controls and using a low limit card for online use.

Ultimately it's the Dad's fault, probably.

However, I completely sympathize with the family and I can easily see how this can happen. My kid had the Roku remote and ordered a 1 year subscription to ESPN+ without me looking. Roku forces you to link your CC info before you can even turn it on.

Also, it's easy to have an iPad linked to a credit card for the convenience, only to upgrade to a different device while little Johnny or whatever uses it to play Toca Kitchen 2 or something. I bet the Mom was working her ass off to provide money for the family during a difficult year and probably only had a vague notion of what microtransactions even are. When she saw the first few charges she thought it was fraud so she had no idea what was happening.

I bet they get their money back since this story has picked up steam and Apple and the Sonic developer don't want too much negative publicity.

Hold up. She received an unknown bill for $2,500; why'd she wait until it got to $16K to file a report? She should've looked into it right then and there. You can also check purchase history from your Apple devices. Also, shouldn't she have gotten e-mail receipts? When I buy IAPs I get an e-mail saying what I bought and the price. And there's a "Report a problem" button if you have any questions.

I mean, she is right. These games aimed explicitly at youger audiences with their blatant microtransactions are predatory. And while child-proofing digital devices is something that every parent needs to do, there's still something to be said for a company that puts the option to spend real money in front of a 6 year old's face.

The parents need to take measures to protect their kids from these predatory measures, but the publishers and developers of the games aren't blameless and Apple is complicit.

Big institutions like those do have large teams but the credit dispute review process is still very much unsophisticated and is a manual process (Ive worked for years adjacent to an institutions credit reporting team as well as directly with the bureaus themselves and the credit reporting system eOscar). Companies have 30 days to review and respond to a dispute or otherwise the bureau will report in favor of the person disputing, and this could happen due to backlog.

And if the dispute process doesnt work in her favor, she could just wait 7 years before it falls of her credit report.
