What is ray tracing, and how does it differ from bloom, or any other lighting effects that preceded it?

It's extremely hard to explain, but suffice it to say that all lighting prior to raytracing was essentially fake approximations of real lighting.

Raytracing is using GPU muscle to actually, literally, trace light rays from source to destination, allowing for interference and whatnot along the way.

How have video games had shadows and good lighting for the last 10 years without this?

I have only played a few hours because I had to go out of town, but it seems like walking through town you approach a door to a business that says "open" and 19 times out of 20 the door is locked and you can't enter. Idk if it opens more later in the game but most of the city seems to be very restricted.

Because they don't, actually.

And you don't really realize it because games are literally designed around static, pre-calculated lighting.

Raytracing will eventually change everything about game visual design. We won't need things like ambient occlusion because RT inherently does it better.

What about all the games with torches that throw shadows about as you move? Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what you mean by static, but plenty of games where the light source moves about and the shadows change appropriately.

I wish I could use higher res photos, but I just took this one from the game. Notice how each texture reflects the actual light sources, from different angles and with different degrees of reflectivity and distortion?

You have to see it in motion to really understand what I'm talking about.

I still can't tell what's supposed to be so impressive here but that might be because of how low the resolution is. To me RDR2 has the best lighting in a game, like mind-blowing lighting

Here's a good video showing what I'm talking about.

Notice how when RT is turned off, reflections are merely static approximations of the screenspace - not actual reflections of what's going on.

You've probably never noticed this limitation in reflections before because all games do it like this.

Basically raytracing allows for actual mirror reflection on surfaces rather than the "artificial" reflections used in games for the past couple generations of games.

Water doesn't look that clear in real life. The water literally looks more realistic without ray tracing.

my friend has been showing us ray tracing by streaming via Discord
Cyberpunk looks nuts. Its a beautiful game before ray tracing (aside from the bugs obviously) but its crazy how theres reflections in someones shiny jacket or somethin. I remember when video games couldnt do a single mirror accurately
He also showed us Minecraft. Its weird seeing Minecraft look so good
I think the most impressive thing Ive seen so far is Spider-Man Miles Morales with Ray Tracing + 60 FPS though

It's cool, but it's definitely not $2000-3000 for 40-50 fps cool. I have a 3070 myself with good parts around it, but I'm pretty sure I can't run this at the level of setting where it would actually wow me compared to, I dunno, Yakuza 7, which looks impressive but doesn't use RTX I think?
