When a product is labeled "refrigerate after opening", do you make a point to leave it out of the fridge until it's been opened?

Curious about this

I've been corrected while putting away groceries and placing items that we obviously enjoy cold in the fridge even if I haven't cracked the seal yet

"Not until you open it!" I've been told

Is this a common sentiment?

I refrigerate the things I enjoy more when they're cold, like you, as long as I'm imminently going to open them. Otherwise I'll keep it elsewhere.

It just means that you need to refrigerate it once the seal is broken. But obviously there's nothing wrong with doing that before the seal is broken.

"refrigerate after opening" just means it HAS to be refrigerated after opening, not that you CAN'T refrigerate it before then

the only reason not to put them in the fridge is if your fridge isn't big enough to fit everything, so you only want to load in the essentials

I eat it sparingly so it'll go bad if I don't.

I never used to refrigerate bread but oh my god it lasts so much longer if I do. Never don't put bread in the fridge.

wait people actually WANT cold ketchup?

I mean you refrigirate it so it lasts but room temp ketchup is so much better than having some cold ketchup on warm fries or w.e

Most of the time, the answer is yes, I wait. Probably because I already have one of whatever it is in the fridge and this is the spare.

How is a ketchup a 'refrigerate after opening' when restaurants always have like 40 bottles of them all over their tables. They never refrigerate those, and it's not like they go through them that quickly.

For topic, I don't usually care enough to put something in that I prefer cold. Sometimes I have the foresight to do it, like with salsa.

Uh, they definitely do. I'd be surprised if those bottles at restaurants lasted more than a month. Ketchup at home can last over a year easily enough.

wtf who likes cold ketchup

Why would you ever refrigerate ketchup unless one bottle lasts you like a year or you buy literal crates of it at a time

It's not mostly sugar. It's still mostly tomatoes.

However, that specificity aside, some of our confusion probably comes from Europeans that primarily use vinegar-based ketchup instead of sugar-based.

...You... realize sugar is a preservative right? It actively inhibits bacteria growth.

It WILL eventually spoil, yes, but ketchup is shelf stable for nearly a year with little degradation. Again, well past what the average person would be expected to keep a bottle for.

Really, though, almost everything I use with ketchup is supposed to be eaten hot, and the ketchup itself is in amounts that take no time at all to warm up. So being refrigerated always seems pretty irrelevant.

Not like when you refrigerate syrup and don't heat it up. That shit is awful.

I've learned to never put anything in a sealed twist-off jar like spaghetti sauce in the fridge before opening, since they become nigh impossible to open when cold
