I've heard it gets bad at a certain point, but I've seen a few clips that have piqued my interest.

It turns to crap after season 3 or 4 I think. I remember being pretty disappointed by the end of that series. If I was you'd and really wanted to watch it, I'd bail earlier than later.

The 1st few seasons are great.

The later seasons not so much, but I still enjoyed them for the most part.

Watch to the end of Season 1 or the end of Season 5. There is no need to acknowledge 6 or later exists.

I've got some time off coming so I'm planning to binge it if it's worthwhile.

Haven't watched it since it ended. From what I recall seasons 4 and 8 were the only ones I didn't like.

Just don't ever watch season 8 and you're good, 5 to 7 are optional.

few good seasons, few bad. still worth it. I saw one trailer for it and bought seasons 1&2.

I predicted who the ice truck killer was the 1st time they were shown. and that he was related to dexter during that house cleaning episode

Seasons 1-4 of Dexter are undeniably worth watching. After that? Nah.

Not really in my opinion

The character simply isnt all that interesting and the supporting cast of characters is insufferable

seasons 1-4 are pretty fantastic (1 and 3 behind the highlights for me), and 5 is ok, but 6 - 8 are like rolling down a shit mountain.

I would say watch the beginning. Whenever you feel like stopping, go with your gut and stop then. Youll only be disappointed for wasting time

One shortcoming of the show is the disconnect between the the premise and the character. Dexter is suppose to be a sociopath. The show calls attention to the idea that Dexter doesn't feel anything emotionally. However it becomes apparent that Dexter is still motivated by his emotional state, he's just bad at aknowledging them or identifying what they are. I suspect the writers never figured out how to keep the character invested in the plot absent of emotions.

seasons 1 and 2 are really good. 3 is ok. 4 has some really good moments, but overall is mediocre. you can take or leave 5. stay away from the rest.

I'm also in the group that thinks the first few seasons were really good and then it falls off after that. The ending was awful.

the writers felt in the begining the show could only end up with him dead or in prison, since he is a serial killer. I think they wanting a third option contributed to that

I think a 3rd option could have been fine, they just wrote it really poorly.

Given all the talk about his "dark passenger" throughout the show it seems that his need to periodically kill someone was just brushed away. What even did that ending mean for him? He became a lumber jack and satisfied his dark passenger by killing trees instead of people?

I mean, I believe that is the point. He was more than "saveable" but his adoptive father took advantage of the situation after being frustrated by the justice system. Dexter was a victim of of his father's selfishness and started to realize it with his family. The show goes off the rails and doesn't really go anywhere with that line of logic, but I thought it was the obvious underlying theme.

I think it was more the therapist who wanted dexter to kill so badly. harry killed himself once he saw what he had actually trained him to do (and I think dexter's enthusiasm helped)

Also: Season 4 is overrated. It has good points, like seasons before and the one after, but it's not as good overall as people make it out to be.

Then it leaves off with a cliffhanger that leads into Season 5, which is a decent seasons that does not end with a cliffhanger. In fact, Seasons 1 through 3 do not end this way either.

I will say in addition to all this that Season 5 was at least better than Season 2. <_<

Dexter was an awesome show that had diminishing quality towards the end.

To a large extent it was very formulaic in that he often had a bad guy of the episode to kill which he hunted but that was not always the case with each season showing an overall jump in his personal life or some revelation or him coping with that seasons events going forward.

althouth all the seasons were enjoyable and by far the worst of Dexter far surpasses the garbage that comes out today, with a few exceptions, the last few seasons did seem to lose direction for a number of reasons both on and off screen.

most noteably the dexter actors divorce from his co star (his sister on the show) certainly impacted The on screen beliveability in their family dynamic that was a huge part of the show.
