Board 8 > Does anyone have advice for my friend who dropped her switch in the bathtub?

She was playing Animal Crossing in the bath and dropped it right in there. She says it turned off immediately and won't turn back on. Should we take it apart, chuck it in a bag of rice, or chuck it apart and then chuck it in a bag of rice?

I've already done the most helpful thing and told her she's screwed

Dropping something on the floor can break it. I had two phones and a 3DS break like this and finally just stopped gaming in the bathroom.

Don't put it in rice. That does nothing to dry it out and can actually get dust inside. I'm assuming she has no desiccants so let it dry for a couple of days and definitely don't plug it in before you're sure it's dry.

In all seriousness, a few years ago i spilled a glass of water on my laptop. It shorted out and I did put it in rice, and after two days it was fine and has been fine since.

The rice thing is 100% real. The rice doesn't do anything though. What happens is that you put it in rice, and this is the important step, don't touch it

If you think she has the self-control to not fuck with it when it's not sequestered in rice, then that's a little easier

rice thing is real but the most important thing is not to fuck around and try to power it on/plug it in while it's still wet or it will short the whole thing out if it hasnt been shorted already

I take a bath every day, and I take an electronic device into the bath every day. We are talking over 4000 baths here without an incident of dropping an electronic device into the bathtub.

update:

last night we took it apart using some tiny screwdrivers and used a hair dryer on the non-screen parts for a while. we toothbrushed some of the battery connectors with alcohol. we let it sit overnight and put it back together this morning.

it actually works! in docked mode only. I have a sneaking suspicion it's gonna brick out any moment but her villagers are safe for the moment.

Just repeating what was already said but putting your electronics on rice does nothing but possibly harm to the device. Every time it "works" the outcome would have been the same if you just set it aside unpowered without the rice.

I left my DS outside in a storm once and it didn't turn on for like 3 days. I didn't put it in a bag of rice but if I did this would probably be an anecdote about how the bag of rice saved my DS.
