The house approved it on Friday. Great news.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/04/politics/house-vote-more-act-marijuana-legislation/index.html

"The MORE Act would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and eliminate criminal penalties for individuals who manufacture, distribute or possess marijuana. It also includes creating a process to remove prior convictions, known as expungement, and conduct sentencing review hearings for federal cannabis offenses." Also a 5% federal tax (goodbye national debt).

Not possible under UN conventions.

The UN already made marijuana changes,
https://news.un.org/en/story/2020/12/1079132

"The CNDs 53 Member States voted to removed cannabis where it had been placed for 59 years from the strictest control schedules, that even discouraged its use for medical purposes."

Wow, this is excellent news!

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell this week criticized the House for moving on the bill instead of passing parts of the Covid-19 stimulus bill that both parties agree on.
"The House of Representatives is spending this week on pressing issues like marijuana. You know, serious and important legislation befitting this national crisis," McConnell said sarcastically on the Senate floor.
This dude has literally ZERO shame!
He had NO PROBLEM ramming Amy Comey Barrett's confirmation hearing through the Senate in a few weeks instead of working on a 2nd COVID relief bill, and has the sheer fucking audacity to cry foul about Dems working on something else now!
I really wish news outlets would take these fuckers to task over this. The sentence should have read, "Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who last month sidelined Covid-19 stimulus discussions in favor of confirmation hearings for Amy Comey Barrett, this week criticized the House for moving on the bill instead of passing parts of the Covid-19 stimulus bill that both parties agree on."

How much money do you think countries make from taxing alcohol and tobacco? Other (less damaging) drugs are a decent addition to that.

That's not how it works.

It passed the house but the senate majority leader is responsible for taking up any and all bills for a discussion/vote in the senate. If Mitch doesn't want republicans to vote on decriminalizing marijuana, then they won't

Okay but

1. Most of that tax would go back directly into marijuana related programs, so not really
2. Republicans don't actually care about national debt it's just an excuse for not having social programs
3. I don't think any of the people reading this topic are Mitch McConnell

Because the government is widely known for using taxes where they say they will.
