In part I think the outgoing administration played a role by denying the seriousness early on months ago and as a result people went with the flow and wanted to continue life as we had known it before Covid-19 until cities started shutting public places in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus.

The same reason people always deny the seriousness of any public health crisis: If properly managed (which Covid hasn't been, but it's still been managed well enough to keep it from spreading to its full potential), they aren't likely to personally see the full damage it's capable of doing, meaning that risk is purely hypothetical from their perspective. Acknowledging the full extent of the risk is scary (and, in the case of Covid, extremely inconvenient and disruptive to everyday life), while denying it doesn't seem to have any immediate negative consequences for them (bonus points where the President publicly legitimized that denial), so denial is a much more attractive option than acceptance.

Alot of the people i see saying its not that serious go with the logic of 'i dont know anyone with it so it cant be that bad'

Because it's not that serious to individuals, it's more damaging to governments and businesses.

Ever notice how it's always people that haven't had a symptomatic case saying things like this? I wonder why that could be...

Like I said in another topic, the antibodies don't stick around, and the "miracle vaccine" only buys you 90 days until the next mutation. This is the new normal, and a year later I'm just fatigued half giving a fuck and going through the motions. The masks and social distancing are never going to go away any more than being groped to get on an airplane went away after we killed OBL. This is the new normal, a boot stamping on the human face forever. It doesn't matter if the virus was a weapon or not, it gave our masters all the leverage they'll ever need going forward.

Its not that serious. However, the authoritarian response is massively serious.

If it's anything like SARS the memory T Cells last decades even if the antibodies fade.

Stop spreading misinformation dude. There have been very inconsistent results regarding antibodies in different individuals and from different vaccines, and we simply do not know the mutation rate of this particular coronavirus at this point. Theres no reason to think that it will mutate at the rapid rate that makes the flu so virulent every year.
