I'm trying to watch something I haven't seen before and was thinking of this movie, but I've heard it's terrible. Although, that was when it first came out. Now that the dust has settled, is it alright?

From what I can gather, the hate was overblown but it still wasn't anything worth watching.

Its not terrible if you go in with the right expectations.

Its a lazy comedy with Adam Sandler-movie levels of jokes. That's not inherently bad, but it will turn a lot of people who aren't a fan of that off.

A big reason it had such a big backlash was also just horrible marketing.

Its an average meh movie.

Better than GB2 at least. (mood slime, slime shooters, mood music, the state of liberty, and viggo and the baby stuff especially were awful)

Adam Sandler is funny. Ghostbuster 2016 is an insult to Adam Sandler. I find comparing movies like this to stuff like that you aren't really getting. You obviously never appreciated the comedy gold that were movies like Tommy Boy and everything else from the 90's and movies like Better off Dead and Weird Science from the 80's. Ghostbusters 2016 sucks. Ghostbusters good. Billy Madison is a really funny movie. People forgot how to do comedy. Obviously if you are compariing it to Grown ups 2 it's not bad.

It's just a generic, badly written comedy with a Ghostbusters skin slapped over it.

Chris Hemsworth tries his best, but he can't salvage it.

its pretty damn mediocre. im also still amazed at how many jokes it threw out in its run time that fell flat. like 4/100 were pretty funny and almost all of those were involving hemsworth.

Honestly, it's fine.

It can't hold a candle to the original, obviously, and it doesn't really have any truly memorable or iconic moments, and certainly doesn't do anything original itself, but the main thing is that it also doesn't do anything badly.

It's not a classic, you probably won't ever rewatch it, and you won't remember many of the details after a few days, but it's not a bad movie, it's just... fine.

it amazes me how they dropped the ball on something so easy.

The Ghostbusters business fell on hard times (again), long after the original 4 retired. One woman runs the whole thing pretty much on her own, recruits three new gals, stuff happens. Cameo from Bill Murray saying "I'm not doing this a third time" or something.

The movie would still be mediocre, but you at least wouldn't burn through the goodwill of established fans. >_>

Personally, on it's own it's a 7/10 movie. it's alright with soem funny moments. But as a reboot to the ghostbusters it is a 3/10. Only because of Hemsworth and leslie jones does it get a 3/10. Other wise it be a 1/10 and possibly a 0/10.

So making all females ghostbusters is cringy but hey I get it. But making it into a slapstick fart joke humour was a stupid as decision. Not only that but 90% of the movie was adlibbed. It's in the extras as they literally talk about it and the hack ass director said he knew his stars would be able to come up with all the material. Basically it is a SNL skit movie based on the ghostbusters with a Hollywood budget.

This, its a shame there's a new supermarket sweep, she has to be the host and acts obnoxious in the commercials I've seen.
Also she's really ugly, that doesn't help.
They shoulda hit up Liza Koshy, the girl who did that double date reboot, she wasn't amazing or anything but compared to Leslie Jones would be much much better (and kinda cute).

A lot of the jokes fell flat. It was like they were trying to riff and improv yet nothing worked.

It wasn't a terrible movie. It was painfully average.

Having said that, Kate McKinnon and especially Hemsworth are worth the watch.

It's fine. Not particularly good, but nowhere near as bad as a lot of people make it out to be.

The worst thing about it is that it's just disappointing. It should have been much better. The writer/director and cast can and have done far better.

Yes, yes it is.

The most notably part of the movie is when it references Jaws because god damn Jaws is a good movie and I should watch Jaws again.

Also it's pretty clear that Sony and basically everyone involved in the film (though Leslie Jones did receive a metric shit ton of actual harassment) played up the hate angle to create a sentiment that disliking the film was tantamount to being a sexist.

I went into it with as open a mind as possible (considering how much I love the original), and under the assumption that it wasn't going to be as bad as everyone was making it out to be. It actually was that bad, though; not hyperbolically 'worst movie ever' caliber - not even the worst movie I saw that year, that dishonor goes to Suicide Squad - but was still a thoroughly bad movie. I laughed at exactly one joke in the entire movie: when Kristen Wiig calls Anthony Garcia 'the Mayor from Jaws' (a joke that has lost a good bit of its humor in 2020, when the dozens of Mayor from Jaws-types running our country continue to fuck up the Covid-19 response).

That's true. But if GB2016 had been an original movie, I don't think it would have spawned a sequel. It would've been a one-off, a bit like Pixels. There just wasn't enough to it. Hemsworth steals the scenes he's in, but he can't rescue the movie.

It's very average. An overwhelming majority of the initial hate was coming from a place of misogyny; I think that's pretty clear at this point. But yeah, it's not essential viewing by any stretch of the imagination (and neither are the originals)

It was kind of amusing with how Judd Apatow was singing his "Women are funny" song over and over trying to market this movie, the funniest thing about it, was Chris Hemsworth's role. He totally stole the show.
