Was Red just randomly at the top of the mountain as a surprise, or did something in the game lead you to him? I haven't played in nearly 20 years. I recall just coming across him and thinking "oh fuck"

You gotta hand it to him. Takes a special kind of badass to just stand on top of a freezing cold, snow-covered mountaintop just to pause and reflect. And the dude is only like 12 or something lol.

I think Blue or Oak mentions he disappeared, but no one explicitly says Red is at the top of Mt. Silver from what I recall; and I just ran through Crystal a few months back.

The whole thing is what spawned the whole "Red is a ghost on GSC" fan theory; he disappeared basically right after beating the E4 and GSC takes place a few years later.

He just disappeared according to Oak and Blue, most likely he was training when you run into him. Probably just resting.

How does that theory explain that you run into him canonically as an adult in Sun & Moon?

Nothing leads you there except perhaps the fact that the area was previously inaccessible to you. I think most people just felt curious about climbing and weren't expecting to find Red.

Might be that there are two seperate timelines now. I think, I don't know if it's official but Gen 2 would be in one timeline and Sun/Moon in another if it's true.

When you beat every gym Oak specifically tells you that you can go to Mt Silver now, and once you go there it's like ten feet from the door to Red so the game definitely leads you to him pretty directly

i think Alpha/Omega imply a multiverse and that the remake is in a separate timeline from the original Ruby/Sapphire. But its been ages since I played that lol

They do. One of the characters mentions how in an alternate universe, they didn't have mega evolution, which is referring to the original Ruby & Sapphire.
