You said this was because of policy, and I disagreed. The fact that Beto ran a more progressive Senate campaign than Joe Biden did a presidential one shows that even if we both can agree the 3/5% difference as a wash, capitulating towards the center did not gain Biden any ground. My alternative reasoning from "policy scared people away" and "Cruz and Trump suck so it's ez" are: 1) The GOP was unprepared for strong Dem strategy and organizing in 2018 that resulted in a blue wave, but were more prepared for it in 2020 2) The Dem strategy was worse in 2020 than in 2018, either on its own or because they didn't adjust to the GOP or both So, to bring it back home, the woes here are not specific policy ones, but because Republicans are good at winning elections and Democrats are not, and the Democrat response is to blame progressive policies and slogans. Edit: And I'll get out ahead of it and say I'm more than willing to entertain the possibility that Biden's swing towards the center DID help him, but the GOP were still able to blow him out.
