Redundant field is redundant

Title says it all. Generally, I quite like rogueli(k/t)es on the Switch because the portable format works really well with the short bursts of gameplay the genre typically promotes. However, I prefer ARPG's on PC because M+KB generally works better for them (particularly anything that needs to be manually targeted). A roguelite ARPG naturally presents a truly insurmountable dilemma that I am completely incapable of solving on my own. Is Hades an ARPG that doesn't really benefit from aiming skills with the mouse? Is it a roguelite that promotes more dedicated play sessions than portable pick-up-and-play? I know not.

it is definitely better with a controller. it's also pretty easy to pick up and do a run once you've played it for a while, so portability would work well for it i think

source: i've played like 50 hours of it lol

I got it for switch. Played for 150 or more hours in a short time. The only reason I stopped right now is for Hyrule Warriors...

I only played it on Switch so i voted for Switch even though that's not really an informed opinion.

I say this because it's very diagonal... I don't really know how to explain that...

If I had to venture a guess, you mean the isometric perspective means you spend a lot of time travelling diagonally, which is at odds with how cardinally aligned WASD is (diagonal travel means holding two keys down instead of just pointing the stick). This makes sense, unless it's click-to-move on PC, in which case it might not be an issue.

I feel this game works better for a controller.

Is there a lot of manual targeting? I understand there's an aim assist option for ranged weapons, which I'm guessing eliminates a lot of the need to aim manually, but I still sometimes find manual aiming to be better. Playing a Leap Barbarian in Diablo 3 was a major example of this: The game would automatically pick a target for Leap, which interfered with my ability to control my position or aim the skill to be more efficient. It worked well enough (mostly because the AoE on Leapquake is insane and hits most of the screen regardless of where I land), but it felt like I was just holding down the button and hoping for the best instead of deliberately using the skill effectively, which isn't ideal.

Exactly! Like you said, it could be a point and click movement, but I can't say for sure. But I think clicking would be for attacking. Especially since you have a regular and secondary attack. Not to mention a cast and dash.

Yeah. I would say there is. There are skills and stuff to help with that. But it's pretty manual until you get one, AFAIK. Of course, PC could be different... But the aiming is more of facing a certain direction. Again, I can only go off of Switch. But it's more like you face a direction and attack on switch, rather than clicking on the target. They may have a video about the pros and cons, though.

Though, I would say switch solely for the portability, probably. It's something you can easily pick up and put down. Even if it's just paused and sleep mode. Though, if you get it for PC, you could try both controller and M+KB. I've never been good with them, so even if I tried it, I would probably say controller. That being said, is there a demo for either version? That could also help decide...

Edit: And if you have the money, I think you can use cross-save to play on both PC and Switch... I think... So, you could get both and play all the time...

I've played the pc version with both a mouse and a controller. After some experimenting I opted for the latter. Diagonal movement is common as discussed above and the auto-targeting system works well enough that I didn't miss the precision of a mouse. Playing on PC does allow you to cheat and bypass some of the annoying grinding, but if you're a rogue-lite fan you're probably not bothered by that and would do better with the switch version.

Can you plug a controller into the PC for it? Steam had that big update where a lot of controllers could just be plugged in and ready to play. I used the Switch Pro Controller for a lot of PC games. Don't have Hades though.

I believe you can. That being said, if he's going to use a controller, might as well use switch the the portability. But I'm pretty sure you can use a controller. My PS4 controller connects to my PC often when I'm charging it...

Alas, there is not. That would have been helpful, and I hadn't thought of that, but it's a moot point.

Excellent, this is the sort of comparison I was hoping to see. Doing some googling, some people are saying that the auto-aim doesn't really work at all for the railgun in particular, and having the extra precision of mouse aiming is pretty much essential, but that was also on the Steam forums where people seemed to be taking the whole "PC Master Race, M+KB>Everything!" thing a little too seriously and I'm therefore inclined to take that with a grain of salt. Any thoughts on that?

Yeah, it's not an issue of being able to use a controller. As Link said, it's a question of whether the benefits of M+KB over using a controller outweigh the portability the Switch offers. A controller is going to be an option either way, but if I'm going into it planning to use a controller, I'll be getting it for the Switch.

That might be nice, but I'm not one for buying two copies of the same game at the same time for such a minor benefit (unless I really love it and/or really want to support the publisher).

Side note: The posts seem to be overwhelmingly favouring the Switch version, but the poll is almost tied. We need some more pro-PC opinions in here.

Yeah. It's probably those people, I would think. I use a controller, and the railgun is like my favorite weapon. And I haven't had any problems with it. As a matter of fact, the first time I used the railgun, I got further than I ever did before that. And that was during my earlier runs... Again, this is just from a switch player. But a switch player who loves the railgun...
