i heard that sometimes people get charged for ambulances. and the hellish cost to have children

im sure its not as bad as i think it is, especially if you have good insurance. but healthcare should be for everyone

Ambulance and transport bills are considered separate from the treatment, yes. If you call an ambulance here, don't be surprised if your insurance fights to deem it unnecessary and pass the cost onto you for reasons such as "you could've had someone else drive you there instead".

It will literally cost you $500 for a 10 mile ambulance ride with no insurance in the USA

Having a child without insurance is over $10,000

This nation's healthcare system is criminal and disgusting

Get a job. Even fast food jobs offer insurance. Every "basic" insurance i have had completely covers emergency services.

If you cant get a job, get medicade. Especially if you have kids, the DHS is more than willing to give you insurance and you can go for other benefits as well.

Pretty much.

And if that "get a job" is a comment towards me, i've been employed for 21 years and own my house, mortgage is paid off. A lot of the shitty insurance that low end jobs offer require $500+ deductibles before you can even see a doctor, and a majority of the nation working paycheck to paycheck who struggle to eat don't have that expendable amount of money. Like I said, it's a nation that shits all over low poverty people and it's sickening.

One of my old jobss cheapest insurance was like, close to 200 dollars out of each paycheck. It was a basic ass convenience store job too so the paychecks were like barely hitting 500. I had to choose between healthcare and paying the bills lmao.

I'm Dutch, and I'd rather have the kind of health insurance I'm used to. Although I do complain about how it becomes more expensive each year and that I don't get my money's worth, that is in part due to my good health and due to the fact that dental costs are not covered for me (having those covered would cost me significantly more than my average annual dental costs.
However It is nice to not have to worry much about costs if something really bad were to happen to me unexpectedly. And I'm glad I can just get a doctor's appointment whenever I want, as that is covered as well.

I've worked on an ambulance, in a hospital, and doctor's office

It actually is as bad as they say. Most people who call 911 are scum of the earth types who don't pay the ambulance or hospital, so regular people (1/10 calls) pay for all of those people. You can have insurance, which limits how much you spend, but that number can be ridiculously high

there are plenty of stories like "why didn't you go to the doctor?? it turned out to be cancer!" Cause I can't afford a $400 bill for a three minute conversation about a rash I hope just goes away?

worst part is sometimes an ambulance is called as a formality, and they make you use it even if you don't need it. one time and ambulance was called for me even though I really didn't need it, it was $700 to drive a few blocks away.

As someone that works for a healthcare system - The system used in the US is a terrible design. With the insurance tied to employed people all it does it bloat the cost for everyone. Insurance companies add tons of admin costs, and patients that can't afford emergency services end up not paying the hospital anything. Which still gets past onto everyone else, or bankrupts the person that got treated.

Our system also creates so many odd problems that wouldn't otherwise exist.
The doctor will charge $400 for a procedure knowing that insurance will only cover $200. But if you have no insurance you'll pay the full $400. Insurance companies encourage this arrangement because then they can say they save their customers 50%.

Then there is the whole weird in network, out of network thing. Where somehow some doctors inside a hospital can be in network and others are out of network. And no one knows while they are treating you.

Nope but I've heard other canadians complain about our health system which is fair it's not perfect but for specialized care, emergency care and the ability to get certain doctors and care is better in America.

My first round of chemo had to be done in the hospital. It was a 6 day stay. Included an EKG, A Spinal Fluid test, a bone marrow biopsy, surgical implantation of a port, and 5 days of chemotherapy. The bill was 86k. That only includes the hospital stay, the Chemo, and the procedures. The lab work and anesthesia were billed separately and were about another 5-6k. The insurance negotiated it down to 36k. I paid my max out of pocket, which is 3200. If I didn't have insurance I would have been on the hook for the full 86k.

Realistically if I didn't have insurance I would be dead because I would have refused treatment.
