It seems like a convenient little option to catch up on my backlog. Is there a certain model that I should really be looking at or are they more or less cosmetic updates? Any essential accessories?

First model is said to have a much better screen, but I don't know if you can find one. The newer one has a smaller form factor and slightly better battery life, and uses USB micro instead of proprietary charger. Memory cards I assume still cost an arm and a leg, and you'll want a large one. Unless you're planning on modding it, which allows for a microsd adapter.

Oh yeah?? Is this not applicable to the first model?

If you're going handheld then Oled vs LCD screens is the main difference between versions, might be difficult to get an oled one now though.

The memory cards are propriety but you probably want a larger sized one than the default.

Otherwise see if you can find a Vita TV.

I believe modding is applicable to all models. The second model has 1GB that can't be used concurrently with a memory card, which isn't worth considering.

OLED screen is absolutely gorgeous to this day. The LCD one is just ok.

Check out ways to hack it so you can play all kinds of stuff on it.

Oh, there are off-brand memory cards on Amazon. Still expensive, but you're really going to pay a markup for Sony ones now. And the same goes for the PSTV. I wish I'd bought one of those while it was cheap.

Are memory cards needed if it's hacked?

64 gig cards have a reputation for corrupting.

well, how big you need depends on how much digital stuff you want to get.

which might be a little harder now, since Sony took all the psp/vita games off the psn web store so you have to purchase them directly from the store on the vita, and some titles may be delisted or unavailable now (like you could never buy Romancing SaGa 3 from the vita store because they were too lazy to update it)

100x - original version, worst battery, charging is propriety, OLED screen is stunning.
200x - revision model, some minor upgrades, microUSB charging, small amount of internal storage, worse screen but everything else is equal or an improvement.
Playstation TV - was called Vita TV in Japan. has a small amount of internal storage, hooks up to the TV, is about the size of an external drive.

the big hurdle with it will be storage. the ideal way these days is Vita2SD, which is an adapter where the game cartridge slot will house a microSD card. you do have to hack your Vita for this and yes, be using ROMs (VPKs) instead of game cartridges. my personal favorite is either the original model for the screen or the TV for the ability to hook things up and have a nice collection of PS1/PSP/Vita games in a small box.
