My downstairs neighbors just pounded on their ceiling/my floor because my 4 year old niece was apparently getting a little active. My niece is now sobbing in the living room.

Someone make some recommendations that don't involve going down there and making sure they never pound on their ceiling/my floor (or anything else) ever again.

Record your niece's crying, amplify it, put it on repeat, and play it next to their door in the middle of the night.

You didn't specify good ideas, thankfully.

Jokes aside I'd focus on calming said niece down and letting her know everything's okay.

So do I stomp on the floor in response? They made my niece cry, and I'm not very forgiving when that happens.

Seems like you want to make a big deal out of it but not really do anything about it yourself. LIke if it upset you that much then yea you should have overreacted and made a confrontation out of it so that maybe the neighbors would have thought twice about doing it again. Or you can just treat it like a normal person and just forget about it since it was something stupidly minor.

Either way contacting management over something that happened once like this is lol worthy and:

Go down there wearing your rattiest, grossest clothing, and act like you're holding back anger and be polite.

They will never dare f with you again.

I thought you asked how to keep them from doing it again, not make sure they do it at every opportunity because they know you're a little bitch

how about not making noise and stopping the source of the noise? you seem pretty upset they made noise that upset your niece, did you consider maybe they have a kid that your niece woke up by running around? you assume these are bad people but they could be just as angry as you

also lol @ contact management what is that gonna do?

Yeah the reasonable response would have been to ask what made your niece cry and if it was something vulgar that they said then go down and confront them about it. If she was just simply upset because someone yelled at her or just the noise in general then you really made a poor decision here.

I fail to see how this is an incident that merited further consideration, an overt reaction, a call to a higher authority, or a request for advice. Whatever your niece was doing, if it bothered them enough to respond, they handled it the way you're supposed to. They could have called management, or came up and knocked on your door, or whatever. That would have likely been going too far unless you were way out of line. There's no mention of this happening before, so I'm going to assume it hasn't and you aren't just leaving details out. Provided that's true, they're obviously not bothered routinely by your activity, so either your niece was obnoxious or they were doing something sensitive. Either way, "they made my niece cry" by thumping their ceiling is not a defense for pretty much anything, unless they did it out of the blue, unprovoked, and your niece is a baby that you'd finally gotten to settle down for a nap.

Yea, sorry man but unless they were deliberately attacking your niece, this is fair.

Also, why is your niece upset exactly?

Did she get startled? did they yell at her? does she feel guilty about what she did?

I can understand being defensive about your family but like, you have to be reasonable too

You could've just gone down there and explained the source of the noise and say you'll try to keep it down. Then say you'd appreciate if in future they came up to speak to you if they had an issue instead of banging on their ceiling.

Or install carpet to dampen the sound you make?

They said that they don't mediate disputes between neighbors, and that this is just a regular part of apartment living. I mean, I get that, but come on. I deal with the noise the neighbors make downstairs without stomping on the floor, so this is just petty on their part.

I agree with this, but it goes for both sides. They were definitely jerks for banging on the ceiling (kids should be able to play, c'mon, it's no big deal) but you were also a jerk for escalating and talking to management.

On the whole it's probably good that management didn't respond, because if they cared so much about policing noise in the building, then your neighbors could likewise complain about your niece and cause problems for you as well.
